Examples of utilizing the potential of the sun, wind and water in design of the exterior walls and facades are shown against the background of the architecture of sustainable development. Use of renewable energy (photo-voltaic cells and wind turbines integrated with the body and facade of the building) and attractive external image of the building and design solutions of facades are discussed together with the need of protecting the building from the impact of the natural forces.

W artykule na wybranych przykładach zostały omówione zagadnienia korzystania z potencjału: słońca, wiatru i wody w projektach ścian zewnętrznych i elewacji, w celu kształtowania architektury zgodnej z zasadami zrównoważonego rozwoju. Poruszono między innymi problemy pozyskiwania energii ze źródeł odnawialnych (ogniwa fotowoltaiczne oraz turbiny wiatrowe zintegrowane z bryłą i elewacjami budynku), ale także atrakcyjnego kształtowania wizerunku zewnętrznego obiektów. Zwrócono również uwagę, że rozwiązania fasadowe muszą zabezpieczać przed niekorzystnym wpływem wymienionych czynników naturalnych na budynek.

Systemy osłon przeciwsłonecznych powinny być integralnym elementem wyposażenia okien i fasad przeszklonych, pełniącym zarówno funkcje użytkowe, w zakresie kształtowania warunków środowiska wewnętrznego, jak i estetyczne. W artykule zaprezentowano wybrane systemy osłon wewnętrznych i zewnętrznych. Uwagi dotyczące zalet i wad różnych rozwiązań sformułowano w oparciu o badania literaturowe na powyższy temat. Wnioski zostały skonfrontowane z wynikami badań opinii użytkowników (ankiety, wywiady) przeprowadzonych przez autorkę w budynkach użyteczności publicznej, z wykorzystaniem metody POE (Post Occupancy Evaluation).

Sun-shading systems should be an integral part of windows and the glazed facades equipment and carrying out both functions - utilities in relation to internal environmental conditions and aesthetic. The paper presents various solutions of internal and external shading systems. Comments on the advantages and disadvantages of the various solutions were based on the research literature on this subject. Conclusions have been confronted with the results of users' surveys (questionnaires, interviews), conducted in public buildings by the author, using the method of POE (Post Occupancy Evaluation).

After certain time of buildings performance, the modernization of their facades is both a necessity and an opportunity for improving their quality, not only in terms of the external shell but also in many functional aspects. The scope of the paper is the discussion of different strategies of facades modernization, starting with popular thermal insulation of the external walls, through the exchange of glass curtain walls, new double-skin facades, to intelligent facades combined with the Building Management System, and facades equipped with photovoltaic systems that change the skin of buildings into energy generators.

Po pewnym okresie użytkowania modernizacja elewacji jest koniecznością, a zarazem okazją do podniesienia jakości nie tylko samej powłoki zewnętrznej, ale także wielu aspektów funkcjonowania całego budynku. Artykuł prezentuje różne strategie podejścia do procesu modernizacji fasad, od popularnego docieplania ścian zewnętrznych, poprzez wymianę szklanych ścian osłonowych, dobudowywanie podwójnych powłok, po fasady inteligentne, sprzężone z systemem BMS oraz elewacje wyposażone w systemy fotowoltaiczne, zamieniające skórę budynku w generator energii.

One of the roles of facades is the informative function. On the grounds of the external image the recipient should receive a legible message about the functions that the building performs. The scope of the paper is the presentation of the results of the survey run on a group of 50 students of the Faculty of Architecture, the purpose of which was to focus the attention on the difficulties in correct recognition of the function of the building based on the perception of its façade and a significant influence of subjective feelings of the respondents.

Jedną z funkcji elewacji jest funkcja informacyjna. Na podstawie wizerunku zewnętrznego odbiorca powinien otrzymać czytelny komunikat o funkcji zawartej wewnątrz budynku. Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badania ankietowego, przeprowadzonego na grupie 50 studentów Wydziału Architektury, którego celem było zwrócenie uwagi na trudności z prawidłowym rozpoznawaniem funkcji obiektu na podstawie jego elewacji oraz na duży wpływ subiektywnych odczuć respondentów.

The paper is a description of pilot research conducted among the students of the Faculty of Architecture in Gliwice to test the questionnaires and draw conclusions for further studies on aesthetic and behavioural quality. An additional target was to define the guidelines for the design of the external image of a university building, which constituted one of the projects run within the framework of the curriculum subject. The analyses were conducted in stages and consisted of open questions, surveys, discussions and free interviews. The conclusions were systematised and, in feasible cases, presented in percentage. The students’ aesthetic preferences were established and guidelines for the design of the facades of university buildings formulated, as well as for their possible modernization.

Artykuł stanowi raport z badań pilotażowych, jakie przeprowadzono wśród studentów Wydziału Architektury w Gliwicach na temat wyglądu zewnętrznego zajmowanego budynku oraz kierunku ewentualnych zmian modernizacyjnych elewacji. Pytania dotyczyły także opinii o „idealnym” wizerunku zewnętrznym budynku, który mieściłby taką właśnie funkcję. Przeprowadzone ankiety, wywiady i dyskusje pozwoliły sformułować wstępne wytyczne do modernizacji elewacji budynku istniejącego, a także do projektowania wizerunku nowych obiektów dla Wydziałów Architektury. Zaowocowały one również wnioskami dotyczącymi organizacji badań oraz sposobów formułowania pytań ankietowych.

Zaproponowana metoda, która pomija zagadnienia związane z odbiorem emocjonalnym architektury, pokazuje, jak w sposób obiektywny można przeprowadzić analizę elewacji wybranego fragmentu zabudowy. Procedury badawcze w znacznej mierze dotyczą aspektów kształtu badanego obiektu lub jego części, które można racjonalnie zbadać, zmierzyć i opisać. Problematykę badawczą uzupełniono o zagadnienia formalno-kompozycyjne w zakresie tych cech, które również można scharakteryzować obiektywnie. W pracy przyjeto założenie, że elewacja jest złożona z części, pomiędzy którymi zachodzą określone relacje. Stąd też wyniknął zasadniczy podział badań na dwie fazy, z których pierwsza dotyczy analizy samych elementów, naromiast druga - relacji zachodzących między nimi.

An important place in architectural studies, intent on defining trends in the development of architecture as well as assisting decisions concerning projects, is held by environmental research. An objective examination and analysis of research material may cause numerous problems. This is why it is necessary to discover a common basis which would render possible a comparison of the examined elements and subsequently, upon this basis, a formulation of further questions. In the case of architectural form, such a foundation is composed of morphotectonics - a science describing the shape of a given object or its parts, which can be measured and counted.

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki pilotażowych badań jakościowych przeprowadzonych w trzech budynkach uczelni wyższych, z których dwa to nowoczesne budynki inteligentne. Były to badania ankietowe i wywiady z udziałem użytkowników. Ankiety zawierały między innymi pytania dotyczące subiektywnie odbieranych warunków środowiska wewnętrznego w budynkach reprezentujących stare i najnowsze technologie budowlane.

The paper presents the results of pilot quality analyses made in three university buildings. Two of them are the intelligent buildings. Users were invited to participate in the survey. The questionnaires contained, among other issues, questions concerning the user's subjectively experienced conditions of the indoor environment in university buildings represented in old or modern technologies.

Artykuł prezentuje analizę wyników pilotażowych badań jakościowych elewacji, które stanowiły podstawę skonstruowania wytycznych do ich modernizacji oraz opracowania teoretycznych koncepcji projektowych.

Facades are associated not only with aesthetics, they constitute a more complex problem, and their quality has an impact on many functional aspects of entire buildings. However, building administrators and users seldom realise this fact. The paper presents the analysis of the results of pilot quality studies on facades. The results give the grounds for formulating the guidelines for the modernization of facades and for the preparation of theoretical design concepts and solutions.
