Robert Cooper, one of the architects of EU’s foreign policy, claims that EU is now on the edge, just like The Habsburg Monarchy one century ago. He underlines historical and political similarities and differences between EU and THM. Latter collapsed due to uncontrolled pre-WW1 arms race; today we are experiencing uncontrolled expansion of the free market and economic instruments controlled by a few. If EU stops yielding welfare due to financial crisis, it is going to crack - starting from countries most stricken by it, like Greece or Spain. In the opinion of Cooper to avoid this situation EU should focus on cooperation and dialogue.
