Stepan Heley analyzes the role and importance of research in the humanities conducted by the Shevchenko Scientific Society during 140 years of its activity. The article emphasizes the fact that the Shevchenko Scientific Society has had all-Ukrainian conciliatory nature from the very beginning and at the same time it has represented the European scientific traditions. The article is devoted to the three most prominent figures of the Shevchenko Scientific Society: Mykhaylo Grushevsky, Ivan Franko and Volodymyr Hnatiuk as well as such activist of the 20th and 21st centuries as S. Tomaszewski, M. Korduba, I. Krypyakevych, V. Kubiyovych, S. Smal-Stocky, O. Horbach, O. Romaniv, O. Kupchynsky, A. Karas etc.
