Estimation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the road asphalt produced in different years in Poland was presented. Attention was paid especially to risks resulting from contact with asphalt and negative influence on life and health of road users. All 5 hydrocarbons recognized by WHO as compounds with carcinogenic activity and have been found in investigated samples, the results are situated between 0.1 and 60 pg/kg of dry mass. Simultaneously, it is necessary to emphasize, that asphalt consist of 90 % of aggregates and 10% ofbinder which contains these analyzed compounds.
The paper presents the ecological strategy of the European Union and Poland as well as the aspects of the needs to implement innovations, the fast growth of the economy is influencing natural habitat more and more negatively. And at this stage new and more efficient technologies should be implemented and particularly eco-innovations. As the European Union directs more and more funds into this area, it becomes easier to receive financial aid. But the needs in this area are still enormous, they are particularly visible in those places where the danger zones for the natural habitat exist.
This paper presents the results of research conducted on some samples with soil and cabbage taken from the vicinity of Olecko town (Suwałki, Gołdapia, Ełk, Giżycko) and containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with 16 aromatic rings, the research is a continuation of a detailed monitoring of progressing pollution in the Olecko region, the samples were taken in August 2006 from the place situated 10 m from a road, this place was at the same time a cabbage plantation, the highest concentration of PAHs (750 pg/kg s. m.) was found in the sample taken close to the road from Olecko to Suwałki and in the sample with cabbage (313 pg/kg s. m.) taken near the road to Gołdapia. The lowest concentration of PAHs was stated in the samples taken in the vicinity of the road to Giżycko, the results don’t overpass the limits permitted in Poland but, unfortunately, are close to the upper limit of natural concentration defined by scientific literature.
