The legendary statue from Zbruch, discovered in 1848 in Podolia, has been considered by the public as one of the most important symbols of the Slavicc world. At the same time, it is one of the research objects that arouses the most controversy, both in terms of its dating and the identification of the figure depicted on it. For the reasons mentioned above, the history of its interpretation serves as an ideal starting point for a discussion on the ease of spreading fake news regarding archaeological discoveries and other branches of science. The article aims to summarize the history of the reasearch of the Zbruch idol and analyze it from the perspective of the evolution of archaeological science through the lens of cultural and political changes. The paper is based on the latest articles regarding the interpretation of the Zbruch sculpture byN. Chamajko, J. Cieślik, O. Komar and M. Łuczyński.
