Purpose: Purpose of this paper Technology ECAP belongs to the most efficient technologies for production of materials with ultra-fine grained structure. Its disadvantage consists in necessity to make 4 to 5 passes through the channel of forming tool in order to obtain high degree of deformation needed for grain disintegration. Design/methodology/approach: Newly proposed geometry of the channel makes it possible to achieve up to double amount of deformation during the first pass through deformation tool. Findings: In this manner it is possible to obtain much higher efficiency of the whole process. It is a completely new approach to development of this technology. Research limitations/implications: New geometry of tool has been designed which represents the first step toward application of the given equipment in semi-industrial conditions. Practical implications: Obtained results form good pre-requisite for further development of technology for production of ultra-fine grained materials. Originality/value: Achievement of high amount of deformation already at the first pass through the modified ECAP tool. This will create an ultra-fine grained structure, which makes it possible to obtain required mechanical properties of formability with much lower number of passes. New findings will be applied in the field of forming.

Purpose: The main goal of the paper is a review of current achieved results obtained by processing of Cu based materials by DRECE technology, the prototype equipment of which was put in service towards the end of 2008 at the Department of mechanical technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, VSB - Technical University of Ostrava. Design/methodology/approach: Device „DRECE - Dual Rolls Equal Channel Extrusion” (dual rolls pressure combined with equal channel extrusion) is used for production of metallic materials with very fine grain size (hereinafter referred to as UFG structure - Ultrafine Grain Size). Findings: The results reached after heat treatment show the necessity of next experiments with changing conditions of heat treatment parameters. Research limitations/implications: This method is used for various types of metallic materials, non-ferrous metals and their alloys. Forming process is based on extrusion technology with zero reduction of thickness of the sheet metal with the ultimate aim - achieving a high degree of deformation in the formed material. The DRECE device is also being verified from the viewpoint of achievement of a UFG structure in a blank of circular cross-section (wire) with diameter of ø 7 mm × 1000 mm (length).Originality/value: Article shows new type of device for achievement of grain refinement in metal strip.
