This paper is a short history of presentation of Russian emigrant literature in Polish textbookssince the 1970s. The author emphasizes that even in the period of Marxist views the best specialistson the subject tried to overcome the pressure of the dominant ideology and to give a completethough necessarily brief analysis of the most important writers of the „first wave” of Russianemigration. In the 1990s starts the process of „rediscovery” of many unknown names in the „thirdwave” of Russian emigrant literature which have also found their way into the textbooks. Theauthor believes that the ever increasing development of scientific research in the field will result inthe appearance of a new Polish textbook which will be able to fully satisfy the students’ needs.

The paper investigates Vadim Sidur’s nonconformity, reflected in his letters to an eminent German Slavicist, Professor Karl Eimermacher. This correspondence, which lasted for 15 years – from 1971 to 1986 – contains unique factual data constituting evidence of the era. As follows from the analysis, Sidur’s acts of dissidence were of various nature. Although he was not an active politician or member of the opposition, nor did he take part in mass protests, still he did not let the party members control or suppress himself and it is by using the language of art that he expressed his disagreement with the Soviet regime. This ‘solitary nonconformist,’ despite the Soviet regime’s omnipresent prohibitiveness and censorship, achieved international fame, which the correspondence under discussion proves.

L. Rżewskij to pisarz mało znany w Polsce. Jego literackie wykształcenie zaowocowało powieściami, nowelami, esejami literackimi. W powieści Między dwoma gwiazdami ważną rolę odgrywają reminiscencje literackie, które uwypuklają nieprzemijającą rolę kultury rosyjskiej mimo tragizmu wojny, niewoli niemieckiej i sowieckiej.

This academic paper explores Polish themes in the novel The Crimean E legy written by a well-known novelist and memoir writer, the first wave Russian emigrant in the 20th century, Nina Berberova. Polish themes in the prose of Russian emigrants, the representatives of the first wave of the Russian Emigration in the 20th century, often appear as reminiscences (the prose of A. Kuprin, R. Gul, B. Zaytsev and others). In Berberova’s The Crimean Elegy a famous opera singer Julia Bolesławowna Z. goes to the Crimea, the land of her childhood and adolescence, in order to calm her strained nerves and, although it is a foreign land, she finds it safe, where the church and the memories associated with it play a leading role. As it turned out, the church, the sound of barrel organs, the chants, Shubert’s Ave M aria performed by Julia Bolesławowna Z. appeared to be a treasure trove of the highest moral values for Berberova’s heroine. And even though the government has changed its appearance on the Crimea and before the church stood now a freckled, snub-nosed “man with a gun”, he would not dare to enter the house of God. A Pole, a catholic, with her music and the performance of Shubert’s Ave M aria, she has revived the passion of the deceased, who once prayed on this land to Black Madonna of Częstochowa or to Our Lady of Kraków.

The sketches of K. Parchevskiy, a little-known emigrant publicist of the first wave of Russian emigration in the twentieth century, entitled Across the Russian Corners [По русским углам], were published in the Paris newspaper Latest News from August 9, 1936 to July 4, 1937, and came out as a book in 2002. Each of them is unique (they are over 30). They fit into the profile of poetics, which has as its object of analysis the ima-ges of geographical space in individual creative works. Poetics has become an academic science as a branch of cultural and literary studies. Parchevskiy’s essays are composed on a geographical principle but are also of interest with regard to statistics. The factual and informative value these essays convey allows perceiving the fate of the Russian diaspora in different parts of France from a new and fresh point of view. The analysed essays reflect the natural reality as well as the historical and creative structure of that period.

Relations between Lithuania and Poland should be laid in layers not only in the sphere of interstate relations which are associated with the Polish and Lithuanian identity. It must be stated that although there have been historical disputes between our nations the countries have always enriched each other culturally. For example, Polish and Lithuanian interest in Adam Mickiewicz and Nobel laureate Czesław Miłosz work. Mutual interest in literature, painting, sculpture, music, art, film and theatre resulted in creation of the quarterly journal “Lithuania” in 1990. “Lithuania” widely presented socio-political, economic and cultural issues and not always exemplary relations between Poland and Lithuania. In the 90s famous names in Lithuanian and Polish culture were reflected on the pages of the quarterly “Lithuania”. “Lithuania” presents a work of dissidents (Tomas Venclova) and the broad spectrum of the culture of national minorities, which are a part of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Great writers Marc Chagall and Czesław Miłosz were writing about Jewish Vilnius in their times. “Lithuania” devotes much space to national minorities, for example the Ukrainian minority. The text presents information from the quarterly journal about Adam Mickiewicz Jubilee. The quarterly journal devotes a lot of attention to issues associated with our great poet and his writing. A separate topic of “Lithuania” is a presentation of similarities and differences between the Lithuanian and Polish cultures and mentalities. Classic literature in the pages of the quarterly “Lithuania” is perceived as a notion of important artistic values. However, it is a pity that during the 90s the quarterly journal lacked more references to the Lithuanian and Polish emigration literature and how they penetrated each other. It seems that the quarterly “Lithuania” owes a lot to the excellent editorial and reflections of the Chief Editor Leon Brodowski.
