Investigations of (martensite - austenite) M-A islands in HSLA X65 and X70 steels grade have been carried out. Since the traditional 'Nital' and 'Picral' etchants were inadequate for revealing M-A islands in a suitable way, a special technique of etching was prepared to obtain the effect of more selective etching for metallographic and scanning microscope studies. Metallograpgic investigations included revealing and evaluation of volume fraction of M-A islands as function of cooling time. TEM studies were performed to confirm the optical microscope observations.

W artykule opisana została historia Katedry Metaloznawstwa i Metalurgii Proszków od momentu jej powstania w roku 1922, aż do chwili obecnej. Przedstawiono istotne momenty decydujące o losach Katedry oraz krótkie notki biograficzne pracowników, którzy wywarli istotny wpływ na jej profil naukowo badawczy. Zamieszczono także życiorysy naukowe kolejnych kierowników Katedry. Końcowa część artykułu poświęcona jest opisowi stanu aktualnego oraz prezentacji zainteresowań naukowych i możliwości badawczych Katedry. Omówiono także udział Katedry w procesie kształcenia studentów na Wydziale Inżynierii Metali i Informatyki Przemysłowej AGH.

The Faculty of Metals Engineering and Industrial Computer Science is the successor to the Faculty of Metallurgy. This brief article celebrates the 85year anniversary and describes the history of the Department in the context of the history of the AGH, viewed through the biographies of its staff and students. Based on the history, this paper details the 85 years growth of the Department (earlier known as Department of Metallography and Thermal Treatment) from its founding on 3 rd April 1922. The article traces the development of the Department into a large academic and research institution. The main mission of the Department is to do the educational and scientific work and give direction on the problem development of the theoretical bases in material science and engineering. Nowadays six scientific groups within the Department, led by professors, offer professional courses in material science and engineering. The activity of the Department, from its beginnings in the 20's to the present day, together with its most important milestones, is summarised in the following paragraphs.

A relationship between the microstructure and multiaxial creep properties of PM2000 tubes is discussed. The microstructure was investigated by X-ray diffraction, optical metallography, scanning- and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Creep properties were established at 1000 degrees centigrade under multiaxial loading. The results show a low creep ductility and intergranular failure of tubes at high temperatures, related to the microstructural and mechanical anisotropy. The development of a special pancake grain structure is seen as a factor for increasing the life time of tubes subjected to multiaxial creep.
