The species Erwinia carotovora (Pectobacterium carotovorum) consists of several subspecies of gram-negative, non-spore-forming, peritrichous, fermentative rod-shaped bacteria and belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family. E. carotovora causes highest lasses of agricultural crops, vegetables and fruits of which the potato is economically most important. The prevention and control strategies for this dangerous bacterial pathogen is possible only through application of early and efficient detection and identification methods. Biochemical, serological and molecular methods suitable for the diagnosis of the pathogen were described. Application of several methods, including molecular markers, for genetic differentiation of the bacteria belonging to the same species or subspecies was also presented.

Rhaponticum carthamoides plants ("maral root") are widely used in Siberian folk medicine. The present study reports for the first time the presence of pentacyclic terpenoid, α-amyrin, in methanol extract from leaves of this plant. α-Amyrin induced proliferation of human keratinocytes (HaCaT) by about 18% while other extract components were ineffective. A panel of biochemical and cell-based assays testing the antioxidative and cytoprotective activites of α-amyrin indicated no antioxidative activity of this compound. α-Amyrin did not protect HaCaT cells against the damage caused by UVB radiation.

The increasing, problem of antibiotic resistance among pathogenic bacteria requires development of new antimicrobial agents. Synthesis and experimental application of the hybrids peptides may be one of the interesting possibilities in antimicrobial treatment. The aim of the present investigation is to determinate in vitro activities of two synthetic peptide amides: cecropin-melittin hybrid peptide (CAMEL) and protegrin analogue (IB-367) against control strains and multi-resistant clinical isolates. Antimicrobial activities were measured by MIC and MBC. The tested strains were susceptible to the peptides at concentrations in the range of 1 to 32 ug ml⁻¹.
