A s head of the Egyptian-Polish Conservation Mission o rg a nized on behalf of Poland by the State Enterprise — The Ateliers for Conservation of Cultural Property — the author of the present report carried out research and conservation work on the site of the upper courtyard of the temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el Bahari in Egypt. During the work an unknown element of the temple, i.e. a ledge over the upper terrace, was revealed. Basing on the studies made, the following conclusions were drawn with regard to this newly-uncovered element and the form of a protective wall, some parts of which have been preserved in the upper terrace: 1) The ledge was to protect the temple again st threats posed by its rooky environment. Apart from that, it could be used for watching and s ignalling purposes. 2) It extended a long the whole width of the upmost terrace and its central part over a sanctuary was made artificially by filling with stones a rocky breach hewn in the massif in order to house in it the first sanctuary room. 3) A possible access to the ledge could be placed only on the south side of the upper terrace. 4) The south closing of the ledge and of the protective wall got destroyed during a ch an ge in the configuration of the rock encircling the structure from the south when making a platform for the construction of the Temple of Totmes III. 5) The protective wall facing the front edge of the ledge was to protect the body of the rock again st erosion, to cover the artificial filling of a centrol breach and an built-in construction relieving the vaulting of the sanctuary, to create the background for temple’s architecture and to enclose it with the wall from the west. 6. The protective wall reached the height of the ledge and there were neither niches nor breaks in it. Nor had it any moulding but was finished with the crowning in all encircling walls of the temple. There has never been any pyramid in the central part of the ledge. When considering possibilities to protect the tempie against threatening rocks, various proposals were taken into account. The revealing of the remnants of the ledge ga ve rise to the idea of its reconstruction, which, at least p a r tially, should solve the problem of protecting the temple. The reconstruction of the ledge involved the necessity to reconstruct a protective wall. The execution of these plans, including research work, studies and documentation, took nearly four and a half years. The justness of the decision to restore the function of the ledge may be proved by the fact that a few barrows of rocky splinters chipped off the massif are collected each season as a result of rocks’ decay. O n the other hand, the reconstructed covering wall provides a background for temple’s architecture.

The author of the article, who on behalf of the State Enterprise — the Ateliers for Conservation of Cultural Property — has for 20 years directed the activity of the Polish-Egyptian Archaeological- Conservation Mission of Deir el Bahari, describes the state of preservation of the interior, discussing the research observations and the work done here by his predecessors E. Naville and C. Winlock. Following this, he describes the unexpected discovery of two hitherto unknown niches in the temple's sanctuary. He presents the subsequent undertakings connected with their exposure, analyzing the reasons that led to their concealment during the rule of Eurgetes II. He also presents the manner of conducting the restoration undertaken by the mission, whose purpose is to expose the newly discovered niches, with a simultaneous preservation of the legibility of their later concealment by Ptolemaic or secondarily used blocks.
