The aim of the study was to assess the abundance and distribution of the Black Woodpecker in the Sobibór Forest in 2013–2015. The survey was conducted on 36 sample plots, covered mostly by fresh coniferous forest, admixed with swampy coniferous and alder tree stands. We found 23 territories of Black Woodpeckers during the study period, with the mean density of 0.4–0.5 pairs/100 ha. The density of the Black Woodpecker estimated in this area was similar to the densities found elsewhere in the country. The research method used in the Sobibór Forest, combining voice stimulation and search for nest-holes within a large area, suggests that the population of Black Woodpeckers in this area has been accurately estimated. The occurrence of Black Woodpeckers in the Sobibór Forest is most likely limited by the low availability of both mature stands and food, resulting from the natural predominance of poor habitats and forest management.
