Queen Marie (1875–1938) played a significant role in the Polish-Romanian alliance materializing in 1921. She also contributed to its firm establishment in subsequent years. She had the right understanding of the reason of state of her country, which was reflected in her contacts with Polish politicians and diplomats. Although the matters discussed during those meetings might not have been detailed questions, still it was thanks to the Queen that an atmosphere was formed which favored rapprochement between the two states. Marie’s rich temperament played a role of no small importance in establishing and maintaining such contacts, as she was fascinated and attracted by outstanding personalities. General Tadeusz Rozwadowski, Polish MP Aleksander Skrzyński, foreign minister Eustachy Sapieha and, most of all, marshal Józef Piłsudski were all people of such stature. Therefore, it is no wonder that her positive attitude towards them was bound to affect the way in which the Queen perceived the Polish-Romanian alliance.
