Sanitation of old waste dumps and polluted areas, which are a threat to the natural environment, is a relatively young discipline, whose importance is still increasing due to progressive environmental degradation. Constructed and operated without an appropriate design, old dumps frequently endanger the environment and the ground waters. Along with the contamination of the groundwater/soil biological damages and air pollution occur. All these factors have a direct influence upon the neighbouring areas by degrading them. Among the endangered natural resources - ground water and estuaries are the most sensitive to the pollution and important to protect. The thorough investigation of soil water conditions and determination of pollutants migration variations and directions have the basic meaning while estimating the impact of ground water filtration to the environment. These analyses, supported by computer simulations, which allow for faster observations of parameter variations, bring the experts in the position to be able to assess correctly the encountered situation and forecast future development. Effective ways to prevent the consequences of the uncontrolled run-off migration can be designed. This work is concerned with an analysis of the effectiveness of various protective measures against the consequences of uncontrolled run-off migration from the dump into underground waters. The criteria for evaluation of the effectiveness of protection have also been established. Hydraulic conditions for filtration of underground waters in the water-bearing layer around the dump have been analysed, as well as the efficacy of various protective measures against run-off migration. On the basis of the results of mathematical modelling of some dumps the efficiency of various protective facilities against run-off migration has been established. The work presents a theoretical approach, with numerical simulations and model verification based on measurements in-situ. Available numerical models are presented and compared as to their potential usefulness for solving problems discussed herein. Computations have been preceded by field studies conducted between 1995 and 1998 at two old waste disposal sites located in Poland and Germany. The results have been verified on the basis of field measurements carried out over many years. The results of research, measurements and computations clearly show that an analysis of hydraulic conditions of filtration in the region of the waste disposal sites and in the protected area allows one to assess the efficacy of protection measures in terms of reduction of run-off contamination or of its migration in underground waters.
