The methodology of this work is based on a study conducted by the author and concerning small tourist towns, their protection and activization. Its material refers to team research into zones of conservation protection, town planning standards and an architectionic model for Janowiec on the Vistula (the voivodeship of Lublin). The specific feature of this article is a combination of theoretical and practical interpretations. On the one hand, the author examines model-ideal aspects of a small tourist town, while, on the other hand, he confronts these model interpretations with the situation prevailing in present-day Poland udergoing a period of transformation. The components of this situation include a developing democracy, with particular emphasis on territorial self-government, a free market economy, together with ensuing hopes and threats, and, finally, new law in the realms of spatial economy, construction physical planning, the protection of historical monuments, ownership rights and enterprises. The following more detailed portrayal of the spatial protection and stimulation of the small town discusses: — the region; the relation between the locality and its widely understood environs, including neighbouring localities with similar features of local culture, which together create a macrospace „constellation” that jointly provides services for tourists; — the zone; the small town in a relation with the surrounding landscape that comprises a direct „envelopment” and recreation environment; — form; the outer outline and silhouette model of the small town — a synthesis of its form (cf. the classical German Gestalt); — structure; the fundamental spatial configuration, town planning contents; — elements of the structure: streets, squares, outskirts, lanes, entrances-exits, plants, dominants, and accents; — architectonic articulation; solids (mainly of buildings) — standard („street architecture”) and distinguished (objects- monuments); — architectonic and urban detail („town furnishing”).
