David Avidan’s Message from the Future (1981) is one of few Israeli science fiction films ever made. This ambitious project of the well-known avant-garde poet has been forgotten for many years, as a result of a financial and artistic failure of the movie. The paper shows Avidan’s doomed film as an interesting cultural text that can be read as the director’s commentary on the Israeli reality of his time. Contrary to the artist’s claims about the global ambitions of the picture, Message from the Future is immersed in the local, exploring it under the guise of narrative structures borrowed from Hollywood. The text analyzes a precise deconstruction of the plot patterns characteristic for the classic American SF films from the 1950s, which Avidan adjusted to the Israeli sociopolitical landscape at the turn of the seventies and eighties.

Autobiographical threads occupy an important place in films of Marian Marzyński and Leszek Leo Kantor. Interesting is the convergence of life experiences common to both authors. We can indicate a lot of parallelisms in biographies of both directors. Certainly, the most important analogy is the fact that both of them survived the Holocaust as children. Common to both artists is also experience of anti-Semitic campaign of March 1968, as a result of which they were forced to emigrate from Poland. The objective of this article is to demonstrate how this personal experience of exile resonates in their work.

Withdrawal of Heroes: Death of the Zionist Myth of Masada in Joseph Cedar’s Beaufort Masada is an ancient fortress, which during The First Jewish–Roman War (66–73 CE) served as a refuge for the last bastion of Jewish resistance. In the first half of the twentieth century, the history of the Masada’s defenders was absorbed by the Zionist movement and transformed into a vital national myth, which became an important element of the identity and culture of future Israelis. The main purpose of this article is to show the deconstruction of the Masada mythical narrative made by Israeli director Joseph Cedar in his movie Beaufort.

The vast majority of documentary films relevant to the events of March ‘68 and its consequences were created after 1989, when the abolition of censorship and the opening of previously hidden archives allowed Polish filmmakers to explore previously prohibited topics. The article focuses on the earlier period, and its main objective is to find echos of this political crisis in documentary films created before the collapse of the communist regime in Poland.

Pietrzak Maciej, O-bi, o-ba: Koniec cywilizacji – postpiśmienny świat Piotra Szulkina [O-Bi, O-Ba: The End of Civilization – The Postliterate World of Piotr Szulkin]. „Przestrzenie Teorii” nr 32. Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 273–284. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/pt.2019.32.14. Piotr Szulkin made his mark in the history of cinema primarily as the author of disturbing visions of the future. His four films made between 1979 and 1985 comprised the science-fiction tetralogy, which is still one of the greatest artistic achievements of this genre in Polish cinema. The subject of the article is the third production of Szulkin’s series – the post-apocalyptic film O-Bi, O-Ba: The End of Civilization from 1984. In the film, the director creates a suggestive vision of a world destroyed as a result of nuclear conflict, in which the original functions of literature and the written word are forgotten. The author article analyzes the way in which forsaken literary artifacts are used in the post-literary reality of the film. An important element of his considerations is also the post-apocalyptic reception of the biblical text, on whose elements the mythology of the film’s world is based.

In the present work, we have reviewed data showing that triiodothyronine and its nuclear receptors modify expression of different genes/proteins involved in cell cycle control beginning from growth factors (such as EGF and TGF-β), to cell surface receptors (EGFR), as well as proteins acting at the cell membrane (Ras), various transcription factors (c-Fos, c-Myc, E2F1), cyclins, Cip/Kip family of cdk2 inhibitors, and p53 inhibitor Mdm2 (Table 1). We have shown how TRs are also able to modify the fate of a cell, thanks to their ability to form complexes with other transcription factors such as p53 - a key regulator of apoptosis and proliferation. Available data show that the function of thyroid hormones and of their receptors on cell proliferation is not homogenous. In fact, it strongly depends on the cell type, its developmental state (progenitor or differentiated), its patho-physiological state (normal or tumor cell), and the so-called 'cellular context'. Therefore, it is not possible to uniformly recommend T3 treatment or T3 depletion to stop or initiate proliferation of all cell types. Instead, a very individual and careful action should be considered.

Calcyclin (S100A6) is believed to participate in cell cycle control. It was, however, unclear if its expression depends on p53, a key regulator of apoptosis and cell cycle. We therefore performed transcription regulation assays in HeLa cells and found that wild type p53 suppressed the S100A6 promoter up to 12-fold in a dose-dependent manner. In contrast, the well-characterized V143A, R175H, R249S, and L344A p53 mutants cloned from human cancers suppressed this promoter with a 6 to 9-fold lower efficiency. All the sites mediating the p53-dependent suppression were contained in the -167 to +134 fragment of the S100A6 promoter. Separate overexpression of either Sp1 or of NFκB only partially counteracted the p53 inhibitory effect on the S100A6 promoter, while simultaneous overexpression of both these transactivators resulted in a complete abolishment of the p53 inhibitory effect on this promoter. Sp1 and NFκB binding to the probes resembling their putative binding sites present in the S100A6 promoter was decreased in the presence of wild type p53. We propose that the suppression of S100A6 is yet another mechanism by which p53 inhibits proliferation. Insufficient suppression of this gene by p53 mutants could well be responsible for calcyclin overexpression and cell cycle deregulation observed in cancer tissues.
