This article considers the literary development of Jiri Sotola (1924-1989), a member of the generation of writers who made their debut after the Second World War. It considers several stages in the history and fate of the individual, in which Sotola, in his verse, but chiefly in his fiction, came to terms with the onerous scepticism about man's helplessness, projected into various periods of history.
