The end of the communist dictatorship in Poland in 1989 was tantamount to the necessity of changing the manner of the functioning of the existent special services. The book presents the model of change of the civil special services between 1989 and 1990, when the communist Security Service was liquidated, and the Of ce for State Protection was appointed with the act of 6 April 1990. The author describes the process and demonstrates that in Poland both the “option zero” and “continuation” models were rejected and a “hybrid” model was adopted instead.

The publication contains addresses by the President of the Institute of National Remembrance Janusz Kurtyka before the Parliament of Republic of Poland between 2005 and 2010. The addresses presented activity and needs of the Institute comprising several divisions: archival, educational, investigative and vetting. The book presents how the Institute fulfilled the will of the parliament and carried out tasks assigned to it under Janusz Kurtyka. The publication is an important source for the history of Polish parliamentarism and research on political elites of the Polish Third Republic.

Based on their biographies, the militarization of admini- stration in Poland after 1926 is apparent. The publication is a valuable study of representatives of the regional power elite (o cial elite), their political choices and their fate after the end of the war in a country dominated by the communist party.

The administration of the reborn state, created in 1918 from scratch after years of partitions played an important role in the recent history of Poland. Next to the army, it was one of the most important institutions consolidating the areas previously belonging to the three partitioners and integrating the new citizens of the Republic of Poland. Such a role was played by the administration both during the twentieth century and in the current century.
