This article presents 80 years of the history of organic chemistry at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) in Lublin. The Department of Organic Chemistry was established on October 28, 1944 as one of two departments in the mathematical-physical-chemical division. Over the 80 years of its existence, it has undergone many reorganizations, its name has been changed, and it has even been demoted to the role of a laboratory. However, it still functions, currently under the name of the Department of Organic Chemistry and Crystal Chemistry. The Department of Organic Chemistry and Technology (initially the Department of Organic Synthesis) separated from the Department of Organic Chemistry and survived until 2006, when it was disestablished. The second unit originated from the Department of Organic Chemistry is the Department of Polymer Chemistry. It has been operating at UMCS for 50 years, initially as the Plastics Team, and since 1989 as the Department of Polymers Chemistry and Technology and since 2006 as the Department of Polymers Chemistry.
