The development of communicative competence can be facilitated by the process of conscious reflection on using language for communicative purposes in a given context. Thus, an important goal of language education should be the development of communicative awareness. Unfortunately, pragmatic-discoursive aspects have not been given enough attention either in language curricula or in language teaching materials. What might be surprising, a similar remark can be made about mother tongue education. The present article is an attempt to present a complex character of communicative awareness in the context of educational goals as well as cognitive activity of learners. It also discusses the necessary conditions and teaching procedures which can contribute to the development of communicative awareness in foreign language education.
