The excessive lengthiness of criminal proceedings in Italy presents a serious, still unsolved problem to the Italian criminal justice system. According to the latest data, an average criminal process in Italy lasts for 5 years and the latest justice reform made it even longer. The Introduction of a series of 'special procedures' did not bring about any acceleration and the length of the prosecution still remains the greatest problem. At present, there are no initiatives 'de lege ferenda' in regard to the acceleration of criminal proceedings. It is hoped that the prepared reform of the administration of justice can lead to the improvement of the situation in this field.
