The treatise deals with the commodification of culture heritage (on the example of city festivities and festivals). Based on numerous, mostly foreign, publications it submits an overview of research approaches to the research on eventization − especially the growing number of city festivities and festivals, which turn into events attracting large numbers of visitors and supporting the commercial character of the events. The treatise points out the tendencies of municipalities and other co-organizers that, wittingly or unwittingly, transform cultural heritage into an economic commodity − a product, which can have an impact on the transformation of values and the forms of different expressions of cultural heritage. The treatise also reflects on the academic debate about the relationships between authenticity and commodification of cultural heritage, which has long been a challenge for (not only) ethnology and social anthropology. The conclusion includes a case study about the Radvaň Fair in Banská Bystrica, held since 1655 and inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovakia in 2011. The fair has experienced several changes − from a marketplace with a predominantly economic function to a city festival that pays tribute to traditional handicrafts and folklore. In the context of the theme of this cultural heritage commodification, the research intends to observe the strategies and goals of the municipality – the leading organizer of the fair – in organizing the event.

A large number of studies within the social sciences have been devoted to the relationship between cultural heritage and cultural/ heritage tourism development in recent years and even decades. This area of study has been an object of interest for numerous disciplines, from economics, geography, sociology and history, to ethnology, sociocultural anthropology, museology and cultural studies. The study aims to present selected theories on cultural heritage and heritage tourism based on recent theoretical concepts, and to reflect their implementation within a particular national and regional context based on a case study of the Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region, Slovakia.

The paper deals with place, tendencies and perspectives of ethnology / anthropology in Slovakia, a new Member State of the European Union. It supports co-existence of more descriprive and comparative etnology that has a long tradition in Slovakia, and modern social and cultural anthropology that needs to be built on a new basis. Results of ethnological and anthropological research should introduce various aspects of traditional as well as present culture and society in Slovakia to a wider readership in European Union, which requires publishing in English or other foreign languages. It is important to extend the range of research topics and pay more attention to various phenomena of the transition society. Research projects funded by the European Commission are often focused on current socio-economic processes, and are mostly policy-oriented and interdisciplinary. Research training has to develop in line with the EU research trends and to reflect changing demands of the global labour market.

The paper deals with the latest perspectives in cultural heritage research. It looks at reasons of an increasing interest in cultural heritage in the era of globalisation as well as at threats that turn heritage into a profitable commodity. It presents a number of cultural heritage definitions. All of them show cultural heritage as a bond between past, present and future generations that is preserved by transmission of knowledge of tangible and intangible cultural forms. The paper brings an overview of the latest theoretical approaches to the study of heritage and of the most frequent themes and topics in the research of cultural heritage in Europe.

The objective of the study is to offer an overview of selected concepts and approaches to the study of the contemporary rural environment and rurality from the perspective of disciplines close to social anthropology (mainly sociology and human geography) on the basis of scientific literature. The study builds on the objectives of the APVV project, introduced in the Editorial of this volume (Socio-cultural capital of successful villages as a source of sustainable development in the Slovak countryside). The selection of theories closely relates to the project and presents those concepts that might bring theoretical-methodological impulses for rural anthropology, but could also be useful for rural municipalities. For better understanding of contemporary theoretical approaches in rural studies, I pay closer attention to key terms “rural” and “rurality”, and further focus on concepts of rural resilience, sustainability, multifunctionality and peripherality.

The paper focuses on food festivals in rural and urban localities in Central Slovakia. Food events and festivals are popular and spread all over the world as it is stressed in a lot of scholarly literature (e.g. Watson, Caldwell, Eds., 2007; Timothy, 2016; Klein, Watson, 2016). They are celebrations of communities and their heritage, and expressions of their identity. They include gastronomy events presenting local culinary specialties, food trade fairs, wine and food tastings, farmers’ markets or culinary competitions. The paper presents selected festivals in the Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region. The main objective is to show the purpose, character and role of rural and urban food festivals with a special focus on heritage aspects and to identify their differences including the current political contexts.
