The objective of the work was to establish in dogs the effects of propofol anaesthesia without premedication in a single dose and in continuous infusion on blood gas exchange and on haematological parameters. Propofol injected in a single dose of 6.5 mg/kg bw evokes a general anaesthesia lasting for about 5 min. Propofol used continuously at a dose of about 0.5 mg/kg bw/min. enables to obtain a general anaesthesia easy to control in depth and time. In the anaesthesia after a continuous infusion of propofol a transient respiratory acidosis and a decrease of blood oxygenation appears. Moreover, a short-lived statistically significant increase of pulmonary shunt develops.

The study was conducted to find out the most reliable parameter of the hoof size in relation to the horse body size, exemplified in mares. The mares of four breeds belonging to different origin types were examined: Purebred Arabian, halfbred Anglo-Arabian, primitive Polish Konik and Polish Cold-Blood, 77 mares in total. The mares were four to 13 years old, classified into three age groups. Three body measurements were taken: height at withers, chest circumference and canzon circumference. The boniness index (cannon circumference to height at withers ratio) was also defined. After trimming, three left fore hoof measurements were taken: toe length, solar length and hoof width. Total length and width were calculated as a hoof solar size measure. On the basis of the parameters obtained, nine fore hoof to body dimension ratios were defined. To evaluate the results, least squares means analysis was used and correlation coefficients between body parameters (1), between hoof parameters (2), as well as between body and hoof parameters (3) were identified. The results show the hoof to body dimension ratios grow according to the increasing canzon circumference to height at withers ratio. The hoof width to chest circumference ratio was found to be a useful parameter of the hoof size. The means (%) obtained (5.93±0.10, 6.41±0.08, 6.56±0.11 and 7.26±0.09 in Purebred Arabian, Anglo-Arabian, Polish Konik and Polish Cold-Blood horses, respectively) are suggested as standards to which individual ratios in mares of similar breeds May be compared judging the horse’s conformation. The age hardly affected the hoof solar size to height at withers ratio in mares four to nine years old.

Based on the review of literature and their own clinical experience, the authors presented the merits of local flap repair of posttraumatic hard palate defects in dogs. In the case described, the dog underwent surgery due to a posttraumatic defect of the hard palate. The defect resulted from damage to the facial skeleton and caused food and fluid penetration to the nasal cavity as well as choking and coughing while eating. The palatal defect was repaired with the neighbouring flaps, creating the first layer with two rotated palatal flaps and an external one with the flap from the oral vestibule. The fistula was entirely covered and the oral cavity separated from the nasal cavity.

The occurrence of intestinal tumors is relatively seldom. The article describes a case of a dog’s ileal neoplasia. Symptoms like persistent diarrheas, significant body loss and reduced mobility occurred. Radiography of the abdomen revealed a tumor of 10 cm in diameter located in the left subcostal area. Blood results showed leukocytosis and an elevated activity of alkaline phosphatase. The tumor was removed during laparotomy, and a part of the jejunum was resected. Histopathology showed the presence of T-cell lymphosarcoma. The patient’s health deterioration came 4 months after the surgery. Repeated radiography and ultrasonography revealed secondary cancers in different organs. The dog was euthanased. Necropsy confirmed metastases in intestines, lungs, liver, and kidneys. Therapeutic procedures on malicious tumors of alimentary tract, including this case of ileal lymphosarcoma, are described.

In this work nanocomposite porous pins were implanted into rabbit knees. The pins were made of biodegradable synthetic poly-L/DL-lactide (80:20) which was modified with nanometric hydroksyapatite particles (HAp) and covered with biopolymer layer of sodium alginate (NA). In vivo experiments were conducted on a 4-element group of the New Zealand rabbits. Osteogenesis was observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDS) after 12 weeks of implantation.

The research was conducted on a selected group of 65 healthy German Shepherd Dogs to determine Q angle values. The animals were tranquilized, positioned in ventrodorsal recumbency, and examined radiologically. The radiographs were converted into digital form and analyzed by specialized software to determine the lines and to make measurements. The Q angle assessment was based on the determination of two lines according to Kaiser and Miles in previous research. The first line was drawn from the cranial lip of the acetabulum of the hip joint to the centre of the femoral intercondylar notch. The second line was drawn from the femoral intercondylar notch to the tibial tuberosity. The angle between these two lines was the Q angle. The results were statistically analyzed, and basic statistical parameters were calculated, such as statistical mean (Me), standard deviation (SD), as well as minimum (Min) and maximum (Max) values. In our study the mean of the results was 17 with a standard deviation of 7.38. These results are are in agreement with the results of studies carried out on foxes, which suggests that the selection of patients of the same breed, size and similar body weight does not significantly reduce the standard deviation in determining the reference values. The differences between the right and left hind limbs were also observed in our study.

The objective of the study was to determine the variation of hoof wall angles in horses of different types. Seventy-six mares at the ages of 4 - 13 years were examined. They belonged to four breeds of different origin types: Purebred Arabians, halfbred Anglo-Arabians, primitive Polish Koniks, and Polish Coldbloods. The angles of the toe, of the medial and lateral walls, as well as of the coronary band, were measured in raised fore and hind feet. The hoof wall angulation differs considerably between fore and hind hooves, as well as between horse breeds. Among the breeds studied, the largest differences occurred between the Purebred Arabians and the Coldbloods. The Purebred Arabian hoof has a low toe angle, a low coronary band angle and high quarter angles, unlike the Polish Coldblood hoof, with a high toe, a high coronary band and low medial wall angles. Distinct differences between fore and hind hooves, as well as between the breeds, indicate that the angles of the hoof capsule cannot be considered uniform but these factors should be regarded.
