The article discusses the problem of locality (ethnic and cultural identity) in the performances in theatres in Silesia. Since 10 years directors have used elements of local culture and history in theirs shows. Narrative referring to the identity of the indigenous people of the region seems to be very important for the local society. "Silesian performances" are very popular. However, the overwhelming number of performances, treat Silesian identity in stereotyped way, focusing on the past, which is mythologized. Recently, this approach, has changed a little. Artists try to show the present problems of inhabitants of the region and theirs hybrid identity.

In the last two decades the theatre in Poland is interested in constructing narrative identity, in creating stories of people and places, which are usually an alternative to the official history. On one hand, it is connected with the contemporary memorial boom, and on the other - it arises from the need to appreciate up locality. To the same extent it is a response to the globalization as it is to the expectations of members of local communities having their own story, connected with the place of their live. Many theatres introduce to their repertoires performances referring to the local context, space and local inhabitants. Some of them treat the locality as a kind of communicational strategy with the local audience. Good example of this is Teatr Zagłębia in Sosnowiec, which is very active in the field of creating local mythology and identity. The article discusses in particular two titles: Korzeniec - referring to the beginnings of the city and Czerwone Zagłębie - which recalls the twentieth-century local history. For the analysis of Teatr Zagłębia activities it is useful to reach for the memorial concept of John Assmann and traditions invented, by Eric Hibsbawm.

The article concerns contemporary Polish theatre, and particularly the creativity of young directors who are in their thirties: Monika Pęcikiewicz, Monika Strzępka and Wiktor Rubin who give up the traditional theatre and mingle with mass and popular culture. The article also focuses on the problem of reception, because theatrical performances, distancing themselves from the traditional ones, still cause emotional reactions of conservative specta-tors who often feel shocked and offended by such theatre. Such performances ignore the hegemony of dramatical text – they deconstruct cause and effect order of narration, con-front text with contemporary context, they are incoherent; they use new media to contact with a spectator by acting that is based on quoting a character and constant balancing be-tween theatrical performance and private life.
