Joanna Piotrowska Uniwersytet Warszawski, Warszawa, Poland j.piotrowska@uw.edu.pl     WYJAZD LWA TOŁSTOJA Z JASNEJ POLANY W PRASIE WARSZAWSKIEJ: PIERWSZE DONIESIENIA Streszczenie Artykuł omawia pierwsze notatki i telegramy prasowe na temat wyjazdu Lwa Tołstoja z Jasnej Polany 28 października (10 listopada) 1910 r. opublikowane w gazetach warszaw-skich („Kurier Warszawski”, „Kurier Poranny”, „Gazeta Warszawska”, „Słowo”, dwu-edycyjny „Goniec”, „Nowa Gazeta”, „Polak-Katolik”). Analiza wymienionych publikacji pozwoliła zauważyć, że głównym źródłem informacji o „ucieczce” pisarza były materiały korespondentów gazet rosyjskich (m.in. „Russkoje słowo” i „Russkije wiedomosti”). LEO TOLSTOY’S DISAPPEARANCE FROM YASNAYA POLYANA IN WARSAW PRESS: FIRST NEWS Summary The paper discusses the first news and telegrams about Leo Tolstoy’s disappearance from Yasnaya Polyana on 28th October, 1910 (Nov. 10, New Style), which were published in War-saw newspapers (“Kurier Warszawski”, “Kurier Poranny”, “Gazeta Warszawska”, “Słowo”, “Goniec” - the morning and evening edition, “Nowa Gazeta”, “Polak-Katolik”). An analy-sis of press publications mentioned above shows that materials from Russian newspapers correspondents (e.g. “Russkoe slovo” and “Russkie vedomosti”) were the main source of information about the writer’s “escape” for Polish journalists. Those materials were not only translated into Polish, but also edited, which led sometimes to creation of a certain image of Tolstoy (a wealthy count, a man close to the people). Nevertheless, thanks to such source materials, publications in Warsaw press are detailed, but at the same time they include, as the Russian texts, various inaccuracies and mistakes. However, opinions about Tolstoy’s act in the Polish and Russian press differ significantly.

The paper discusses Adolf Rudnicki’s story Shakespeare (1946) depicting the life of Jakub and Maciej, two representatives of so called “generation 1910”, for whom WWII became the end of youth and the beginning of their premature aging. Hence, the youth of the protagonists corresponds to a pre-war and the senility to a post-war stage of their life. The pre-war life histories of Jakub and Maciej contain autobiographical and biographical references, at the same time characteristics of writers of “generation 1910” are also brought to the foreground. But in the post-war life histories of the protagonists we can see two opposing paths of one man and consequently also interpret the story itself in two ways: as Rudnicki’s personal contemplation of the two potential variants of his own further biography or as a reflection on two possible paths of Polish writers, in particular of Jewish origin, who have experienced WWII.

RUSSIAN AND POLIS H HUMOR MAGAZINESON THE WILL OF LEO TOLSTOYSummaryThe article discusses publications concerning Leo Tolstoy’s will, which appearedsoon after his death in Polish (“Mucha”, “Kolce”, “Nowy Szczutek”) and Russian(“Satirikon”, “Budilnik”) humor magazines. These publications focused on two topics- open letters by Lev Lvovich Tolstoy (the son of the writer accused VladimirChertkov of the death of his father and concealing the last version of the will fromTolstoy’s family) and plans for selling Yasnaya Polyana, which were described in thedaily press. An analysis of publications shows that Polish humor magazines, like theRussian ones, judged the heir to Tolstoy’s property critically, but the criticism ofPolish press was not as harsh. However, unlike Russian magazines, Polish periodicalsclearly compared the writer with his mercantile sons and - which is interesting- with his wife. At the same time Polish opinion of the will as such was ambiguous.русские

Background. A new era of youth and formation of a new system of values are much talked about. The aim of this study was to describe and explain the relationship between socioeducational factors and the growing popularity of the attitude of fair play among young people undertaking physical activity and at the same time experiencing the formation of a new system of values and morality. Material and methods. The study involved more than 600 senior high school students from 2 kinds of schools: sports-oriented and Christian. The study was conducted in Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot in 2000, 2008 and 2012. Youth for testing were chosen randomly, regardless of affiliation to these schools. The variable that differentiated respondents from these schools was involvement of young people in sport. An auditory survey was used during a lesson in a special research room. Results. General value system in general is an important and significant predictor of attitudes of fair play. High evaluation of the higher-order values, such as the truth, the holy and the moral, are of particular importance for the development of sports morality. Conclusion. A way to change the negative trends in the axiosphere of today’s youth is educating young people in the values of fair play.

Introduction: The assessment of functional fitness of older people, who took part in different forms of activities e.g. in programs which are offered by UTW, together with the information about the fitness level, can have a great importance in optimization of motor activation of older people. The aim of this study is to evaluate the changes in the level of functional fitness and basic parameters of the anthropometric parameters of older women after 16-weeks activity program offered by University of the Third Age (UTW) at the Józef Piłsudski University of Physical Education in Warsaw. Material and methods: Ten women at the age of 72,0±5,40 who attended UTW 1,7±0,48 years took part in the study. Women participated in the activities 2-3 a week, and the major activities were Nordic Walking and gymnastics. Moreover they had a chance to attend Tai Chi, swimming and dancing classes. The Fullerton Functional Fitness Test was used to assess women’s functional fitness. Test was done twice - during the second week and at the end of first semester. Results were evaluated with the usage of norms described for particular test trials and age groups (Jones and Rikli 2002). Measurements and evaluation of basic anthropometric parameters were done as well as Body Mass Index was calculated. Results: At the end of the cycle of activities, it turned out that women achieved better results during the fitness tests than they had after the first test. During evaluation with the usage of norms of Fullerton Fitness Test good level of aerobic endurance, strength and coordination of tested women was noted, however the flexibility test results gave evidence of negligence in this area. It was also discovered that participation in the cycle of physical activities might have been one of the elements that caused positive, considering health, changes in anthropometric parameters of tested women. Reducing of the body mass and the percentage of the fat tissue and regular physical activity had an influence on lean body mass increase. onclusions: Physical activities done by UTW participants during the program, where the major activities were Nordic Walking and gymnastics, had the influence on improvement of their fitness and positive changes in their anthropometric parameters.

Introduction Quality of life is identified as a key element in healthy ageing. A decrease in physical activity and fitness levels as well as fear or depression increase the frequency of hospitalisation and mortality rate among elderly persons. Moreover, these factors significantly reduce the quality of life. The aim of the study was to determine changes in elderly women’s perception of their quality of life that occurred over a period of 3 months of attending regular classes. In addition, the study sought to identify factors that would make it possible to predict these changes. Material and methods The study included 56 women aged 58 to 85 (M=69.54; SD=6.578). Their quality of life was assessed with an abbreviated version of WHOQOL -Bref questionnaire. Severity of depressive symptoms was examined with the use of the Geriatric Depression Scale (a 15-item version). In order to determine physical fitness levels, FFF Test was carried out. Results The examined group manifested changes in the depression indicator, i.e. its levels decreased significantly. A considerable increase in self-rated health was observed. There occurred a significant increase in the women’s perception of their quality of life in social and environmental domains. No significant changes in the quality of life were noted in physical and psychological domains as well as in overall satisfaction with the quality of life. Conclusions The findings suggest that attending classes at the UTA may produce benefits in the field of psychological health and life quality, and their scope may depend on the initial state of physical health and physical fitness.
