The proposed study is a continuation of the research which opened last year and whose findings were published in a study about Czech christology of the 19th century. Several publications from the 19th century are supplemented and certain major indigenous and translated studies from 16th to 18th century are pointed out in the first part, whereas the second part introduces Czech indigenous and translated literature from 1901 to 1910. It would appear that the amount of publications in the first decade of the 20th century is comparable with the amount in the last decades of the 19th century. As expected, the preaching and spiritual literature distinctly prevails quantitatively. Moreover, the number and quality of the non-Catholic literature increased at the beginning of the 20th century.

In the beginning of his paper, the author presents the basic contributions of the document Theology Today (published by the ITC) to the method of systematic theology. The most important contribution is twofold: a clear distinction between the Apostolic tradition and other traditions and a clarification of the object of interest of theology. The author comes to the conclusion that the proper object of theological interest is man’s relation to God the Father and God the Father’s relation to people. The author subsequently comments on article 84 of Theology Today, in which inspirations from theology for other sciences are discussed. Theology primarily offers other sciences the courage to carry out self-deabsolutization and de-ideologization, which is a condition for meeting others and transcending the borders of their own competence concerning the wisdom of life. The modern natural sciences are unimaginable without the idea of an intelligible Creator since otherwise the quest for intelligible laws of nature in the material world lacks meaning. Moreover, the Biblical linear concept of time provides the background for the idea of evolution in biology. This coincides with the nature of the natural sciences, which are, concerning their world view, strictly neutral. This should be respected by believers in order to avoid danger methodologically similar to the materialistic “scientific world view”.

The aim of this paper is to highlight a common denominator in the work of a historian, theologian and scholars in each of the humanities. The author first clarifies his concept of the spiritual dimension, pointing out that the rectification of one’s relationship to the past as a prerequisite of the undistorted present and the future and that this remedy is, from the spiritual point of view, a sort of conversion. Another problem involves how to present the ideal in the post-ideological time. An awareness of the multi-dimensionality of reality leads us to humility in making judgements while protecting us from their absolutisation. The common denominator of the spiritual dimension of the efforts of a humanities scholar is undoubtedly an openness to transcendence, which in the work of a historian, takes a specific form, and does not have to be influenced by an explicit Christian faith.

The aim of this study is a critical analysis of the Trinitarian Theology and Pneumatology of R. Špaček (1864–1925), the author of the first complete university textbook of Dogmatic Theology (1922 – 1926 – 1930) written in Czech. In its introduction, the author explains the reasons for this study and presents the basic hermeneutic points of view of his analysis. He consequently introduces the life and work of Richard Špaček and presents Špaček’s three texts which deal with Trinitarian Theology and Pneumatology. The work of Špaček is characterized by methodological discipline, knowledge of co–temporary literature and an excellent level of language. At the same time it is apparent that his thinking suffers from the same deficiencies which were typical for Dogmatic Theology of his era, but in Špaček’s work there are some elements which are relevant up to the present.

The aim of this study is to present the document mentioned above and reflect on its content. First, the status and the nature of the ITC documents are discussed. The author subsequently presents the most important statements contained in the individual chapters. In the first chapter the document deals with the “Word of God” as opposed to the word of man. The author points out that the constitution Dei verbum is cited incorrectly in contemporary documents of the Church as Dei Verbum. In the second chapter the document clearly distinguishes between the apostolic tradition and ecclesiastic traditions. This step can be classified as a shifting of this meaning to the level of sententia communis. In the third chapter the principle stating that God is the proper object of theology is discussed. The document clearly reflects the spirit of Vatican Council II and consists of a definite appeal to a change in mentality in harmony with the requirements of the Gospel.

The article reacts to a document by the International Theological Commission on Trinitarian monotheism and its opposition to violence. The author points out numerous imperfections in methodology and facts within the document. The article criticizes the imperfections and consequently attempts to supply deficiencies. The core of the article is an analysis of the notion that three divine persons subsist in one divine nature. The author demonstrates certain serious problems which are hidden within this notion, while presenting W. Kasper’s and M. Bordoni’s critical approach to P. Schoonenberg’s views from the 1960s and 1970s. The article contains in summary not only clarifications of certain aspects of the theological reflection concerning the unity of humanity, but also an appeal to colleagues to join up with the letter addressed to the International Theological Commission which would express the view of Czech theologians regarding the last achievement of the Commission.

In this paper the author first outlines the new revolutionary concept of the local church as raised by the Second Council. He highlights the insufficient implementation of this innovation in the life of the Church in Bohemia and Moravia, as well as in the Catholic Church in general. In the second point, he interprets the Council’s teaching on this critical topic and also recalls the post-conciliar development of theological reflections on the issue of the particular and local church. Finally in the third paragraph he applies the possibilities offered by this doctrine on the issue of the transformation of the attitudes of contemporary Czech Catholics to the figure of Jan Hus and the Hussite movement. Hus and the subsequent Hussite movement can be perceived as a reformist wing within the universal Church of that time. Utraquism in particular appears to him as a specific form of the local church within the universal Church.

The author of the article does not introduce only the content of the commented text, but aims at grasping the unifying notion of the first encyclical of Pope Francis Lumen fidei. According to the author, it is a dialogical personalism, consistent and with prophetic boldness, which is the philosophical ground for the formulation of the Trinitarian concept of faith which means the living participation of the baptized in the relationship of the sonship within the Godhead in the strength of the Holy Spirit. Such a concept of faith is nonideological, having a huge liberating force which subsequently diffuses outside the church as well and to the entire creation.

In this paper the author classifies the christological publications of Czech authors and the christological literature translated into Czech in the 19th century. In each group, the entries are listed in chronological order and provide basic information regarding the content and the genre. This foundation can be used for future preparation of a treatise dedicated to the theme of Czech christology of the 19th century. The overview of collections of sermons, in particular from the first half of the 19th century, points to the possibility of their successive rendering in student theses which will constitute the basis for the subsequent evaluation.

The author mentions two critical notes on the work of the ITC which does not consider its own former documents in its subsequent chronological texts. Moreover, the documents of this Commission are in need of an institutionalized academic dialogical reflection. Furthermore, the author deals with the category of species, which is very important in the sphere of natural order. Finally, the author demonstrates that the so-called “Golden Rule” is not particularly comprehensible out of the Trinitarian Image of God.

In this paper the author presents publications which are significant for revealing the attitudes of Czech Catholic theologians to the challenges of the natural sciences in the period 1850–1950, published in the periodicals Časopis Národního musea and Museum bohoslovců českomoravských. He subsequently evaluates in detail the so-called Braun thesis introduced by an important exponent of evolutional thinking in Bohemia of the second half of the 19th century J. L. Čelakovský and points out to the risk of an inclination to pantheism connected with it. Finally, the not‑contradictoriness between the definition of man as “an animal capable of sin” on the one hand and the Christological principle of Jesus’ impossibility to sin on the other is clarified. Through all these steps the previously edited monograph: C. V. Pospíšil, Zápolení o naději a lidskou důstojnost. Česká katolická teologie 1850‑1950 a výzvy přírodních věd v širším světovém kontextu, Olomouc: University of Olomouc Press, 2014, is renewed. The results of further research do not result in any changes to the conclusions reached by the author in the above mentioned book, nevertheless the collection of found publications is enriched and certain appraisals of thought are specificied in further detail.

The author provides evidence in the paper that Hus’ christology and soteriology do not depart from the boundaries of Catholic orthodoxy. Although Hus’ theology was time-conditioned, the author finds compelling questions therein (in contrast to modern commentators). Hus worked on the third book in the first semester of the academic year 1408/1409, which was a time involving a dramatic turn in his fate. Hus’ christology and soteriology is shaped in Anselm’s manner. It contains thought-provoking statements about Christ’s predestination, about his natural mortality, about the reverence of Christ’s humanity and about the worship of images. Hus’ theology of history focuses on the incarnation as the climax and fulfilment of the history of the world. The concept of Christ’s sinlessness, not excluding the ability to sin, is also interesting. In the conclusion, the author brings to light certain inconsistencies contained in the first half of the third book of Hus’ Commentary on Sentences.

This study is the first systematic theological work on this topic in Czech theological literature over the last two centuries. In the first part, the author points to the connections between demonology and other thematic fields of systematic theology. The proper hermeneutical key to Christian demonology is to be found in Soteriology and Christology. Furthermore, Christian demonology has important connections with the image of God, the Creator and the Saviour, with anthropology and spirituality. In the second part, the author deals with the sources of biblical demonology and with the problem of the personal nature of devil, which must be understood in an analogical sense. The neglecting of this rule causes numerous misunderstandings. In the third point, the author compares the propositions of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church with contemporary popular literature on the devil and exorcisms. The greatest difference consists in the category of so-called ‘maleficium’, which the Magisterium makes little mention of and even warning against superstition in this regard. In the next part, the author proposes inspirations for distinguishing between cases of actual obsession and mental pathological states. In the last point, the author presents the results of his work.

The aim of this study is to evaluate how Czech Catholic theology approached the contribution of the sciences in 1850–1930, particularly new discoveries and theories in astronomy. This is demonstrated with a wide scale of papers and books by Czech Catholic theologians indicating there was actually no tension between scientists and theologians and that the first chapters of Genesis were by no means read in a Fundamentalist manner. The competence of astronomy was fully respected. If any polemic emerged, it took place on the axis of the “Christian world view” – “materialistic and atheist interpretation of the world".

This paper introduces and reflects upon methodological merits of the author’s long-standing work on a book dedicated to the topic of Czech Catholic theology’s reaction from 1850 to 1950 to the challenges posed by natural science in the world-wide and interdisciplinary context. It is demonstrated that there is no tension on the axis theology vs. natural science, but on the axis theistic vs. atheistic world-view. The author rejects ideologisation of theology and natural science. In theology, this topic is in the competence of fundamental theology, where a new discipline of “theology of natural science” should be established. Therefore, it should be integrated into dogmatic theology as well, esp. to the treatise on God the Creator and on the qualities of the Triune Creature.

In the present collective study the members of the Department of Systematic Theology at the Cyril and Methodius Theological Faculty of Palacky University in Olomouc respond to the encyclical of Pope Francis Laudato si’. First, they point out that the encyclical amounts to a strong defense of the Christian approach to problems of the environment. It consists of a certain completion of Compendium of Social Doctrine of Church where the dignity of all creatures is emphasized. Theo mariological, sacramentological, eschatological and ethical parts of the text are also inspiring in this respect. Most of what the encyclical presents has been for a long period of time an integral part of the lessons and formation in all the disciplines offered by the Department of Systematic Theology.
