Some modifications of the pseudorandom number generator proposed recently by Holian et al. [B. L. Holian, O. E. Percus, T. T. Warnock, P. A. Whitlock, Phys. Rev. E50, 1607 (1994)] are presented.

Structural and elastic properties of the densest known solid phase of two-dimensional (2D) system of hard cyclic pentamers (each pentamer is composed of five discs which centres are placed at vertices of a perfect pentagon of sides equal to the disc diameter, delta) are studied by Monte Carlo simulations. The present study confirms that at high densities the pentamers form a 2D solid structure of rectangular lattice with two pentamers (which librate, without rotation, around their mean orientations) in the unit cell. Elastic constants calculated for this structure show that, in contrast to densely packed 2D hard cyclic heptamers (composed of seven discs of centres forming a perfect heptagon of sides equal to the disc diameter delta), the pentamers do not exhibit anomalous Poisson's ratios.

Preliminary results concerning influence of polydispersity of ‘atomic’ sizes on elastic properties of the rotator phase of a three-dimensional system of hard dumbbells have been presented. It has been shown that, in contrast to two-dimensional hard discs and three-dimensional hard spheres, for the polydispersity parameter not higher than 5%, there is no significant influence on the elastic constants and Poisson’s ratio of hard dumbbells of the anisotropy parameter 0.15 (i.e., when the discs forming dumbbells are distanced by 15% of the average disc diameter).

A simple algorithm is proposed to study structural and elastic properties of matter in the presence of structural disorder at zero temperature. The algorithm is used to determine the properties of the polydisperse soft disc system. It is shown that Poisson's ratio of the system essentially depends on the size polydispersity parameter; larger polydispersity implies larger Poisson's ratio. In the presence of any size polydispersity, Poisson's ratio increases also when the interactions between, the particles tend to the hard potential.

EN
It has been shown that anomalous relaxation in dielectrics can be described in terms of equations with fractional derivatives. The solutions of the resulting equation with fractional derivatives are expressed by the Mittag-Leffler function and the Fox function. The conditions of a change from the Debye relaxation to "slow" (anomalous) relaxation with a power time dependence have been examined in the limits t › 0 and t › ∞.
