The article describes the influence of climatic and cultural factors on architectural form of residential buildings built in XVIII and XIX century on Podhale area. Mountain ranges give very strict requirements for the emerging and evolving architecture. The text refers to a model of podhalanski houses, that came into being within years of evolution. Type of podhalanski house has become a "pre-fabricated product" with perfectly functional and rational form, condensed shape, carefully designated proportions and lucrative heating system. Due to its construction, it could have been readapted and transformed. The thoroughgoing study of these houses can help to find out - were there any passive or energy-efficient solutions in podhalanski houses?

Dendrochronological methods were used to analyze geomorphic processes in the Arctic area. Samples of dwarf shrubs, Salix polaris and Salix reticulata, were collected from different morphodynamic surfaces: talus cones, debris flow tracks and fluvioglacial terraces. Clearly visible, countable and measurable annual growth rings (ranged from relatively wide 0.8 mm in width, to extremely narrow rings less than 0.01 mm in width) and wood anatomical changes (scars, tension wood) allow for using these species in dendrogeomorphological examinations. The age of the dwarf shrubs showed the minimum time during which the surface was disturbed by mass movements (e.g debris flow tracks developed in the early 1950s and 1970s) or the time of plant colonization which indicates disappearance of geomorphic processes (e.g. determining the age of fluvioglacial terraces in the Arie valley). Dwarf shrubs represent problems in synchronization of growth curves (discontinuous rings, missing rings, asymmetric geometry of stem). Samples taking from random surfaces can reflect only local phenomenon, which are limited to microtopography. It is necessary to -analyze material from entire area of geomorphic form.

The paper describes the depth of field simulation method applied to already taken photographs. It is consistent with the physical aspect of the phenomenon and bases only on parameters which are equivalent to the properties and settings of the digital camera. Author describes main depth of field basics and, taking into consideration digital photography aspect, introduces equations for circle of confusion estimation and further - four versions of blurring algorithms with different computational complexity and advancement level. The potential user of the implemented method can test individual camera setup and/or learn how each of its elements influences the depth of field effect on an image, without any knowledge about image editing methods or geometrical optic physics required.

Greater warmth and precipitation over the past several decades in the High Arctic, as recorded in meteorological data, have caused shrub expansion and affected growth ring widths. The main aim of the study was to develop a tree-ring chronology of polar willow (Salix polaris Wahlenb.) from southwest Spitsbergen, attempt to explain its extreme pointer years (extremely low value of growth-ring widths) and to demonstrate the dendrochronological potential of this species. This plant is a deciduous, prostrate, creeping dwarf shrub that produces anatomically distinct annual growth rings with the consistent ring width variation. After using serial sectioning we developed rigorously cross-dated ring width chronology covering the period 1951–2011. Since the beginning of the 1980s an increase of the mean and maximum growth ring width has been observed which is consistent with the increase of both temperature and precipitation in the Arctic reported from meteorological sources. Nine negative extreme years were distinguished and explained by complex hydroclimatic drivers, which highlight the importance of availability of moisture from snowpack and spring precipitation. An additional negative factor present in the years with very low dwarf shrubs growth is rapid thawing and fast freezing during winter as well as low sunshine duration. Our results contradict the prior assumption that inter-annual tree growth variability of dwarf shrubs from polar regions is controlled simply by temperature.

The interest in services offered by wireless network has been growing for many years. It has encouraged the development of wireless technologies. New solutions are able to satisfy the ever-increasing demands concerning wireless services. It is also evident in the diversification of quality assessment methods employed with reference to connections used in such networks. One of the basic elements used in connection quality assessment are metrics. The use of metrics is directly linked to the type of the routing protocol applied in a given network. The selection of a given routing protocol is often determined by its specific properties that might be advantageous in a certain network type, or that are important in terms of the type or scope of services provided. Therefore, it is easy to identify a relationship between metrics and the area of application of a given routing protocol. The significance and diversity of metrics is also reflected inWireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). The proposed paper presents a review of the current state-of-the-art routing metrics for Ad-hoc and WMN networks.

Dendrochronological methods were used to determine the frequency of debris flow/avalanche events in a forest zone. A debris flow and avalanche track located in the Eastern Sudetes Mountains (Central Europe) was analysed. The length of the youngest debris flow/avalanche track is about 750 m. Three distinct sections of the debris flow can be identified along the longitudinal section: niche, gully and tongue. The dendrochronological study shows that trees started growing on the margins of the debris flow between 1908 and 1963. Hence, debris flow and/or avalanche events occurred on this slope at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. All trees collected from the tongue started growing between 1935 and 1964. However, a large debris flow event took place several years before, most probably during an extraordinary rainfall in June 1921. Following this event, several relatively large debris flows have occurred during the growing season, the strongest dendrochronologically confirmed events occurring in 1968, 1971-1972, 1991, 1997 and probably in 1977. Spring debris flow events induced by snow melt and/or avalanches have occurred in 1994 and 2004. The results suggest that with favourable geological conditions, debris flows can occur very frequently within entirely forested slopes.

The article describes the use of the PID controller to control the manipulator equipped with electrohydraulic drives. The design of the manipulatora was based on an unusual parallel kinematics, in which arm movements are dependent on each other. The authors attempted to minimize the error of process control by the integral performance indices to compare the tuning parameters of PID controller with aproportional controller.

The research of computer networks construction of models that reflect the current audited environment to carry out practical research is extremely dicult and often involves signicant costs. Hence, the popularity of simulation tools that help developers to determine as early as at the stage of the simulation whether a given solution can be deployed in a real network. However, over time many dierent simulation tools have been developed, each with dierent characteristics, dierent uses, dierent strengths and weaknesses. It is the task of the researcher then to select, before starting the actual research, one of the available simulators in accordance with the needs and adopted criteria of evaluation. In the article the authors present issues related to the simulation tools and the main advantages of simulation as well as their drawbacks. To help researchers select an appropriate simulation environment, the authors present statistical information gathered during a literature survey of a number of research articles from the most popular publishers in which the selected simulators were used in initial system design.

The paper presents a control system, which uses a simple internet camera with a PC based markers recognition software for tracking human hand movement by a 2-axis manipulator with electrohydraulic servo drives. Three colour markers are attached to the operator's hand and arm, which are tracked by a vision system. It recognizes these markers, calculates their two-dimensional coordinates and sends them to the manipulator main controller, which calculates the desired signals to satisfy the requirements of electrohydraulic servo drives. These signals are then sent to the manipulator slave controller, which governs the movements of the electrohydraulic servo drives installed in the manipulator. In this way, the manipulator is able to follow the human hand.

River floodplains have been recognized as an important sink for suspended sediments and associated contaminants mobilized from upstream catchments. However, information on rates of overbank sedimentation within time span of several tens of years is impossible to obtain using conventional sediment traps. Measurements of the 210Pb content in floodplain sediments provide an alternative approach for obtaining estimates of medium-term (100–150 years) rates of overbank sediment deposition. The use of 210Pb method and heavy metals concentration profiles allowed to obtain retrospective estimates of recent sedimentation rates on floodplain of the Warta River (the Cracow Upland, southern Poland). The results are compared with dating of sediment layers by characteristic peaks of heavy metal concentrations. The highest sediment accretion rate, of the order of 1 cm/year, was found in a levee along river bank. Sediment deposition in flood basin is much slower and usually does not exceed 1 mm/year.

Properties of miscanthus hydrochars obtained through wet torrefaction were studied. The process was carried out in three different temperatures – 180, 200 and 220 °C and with four different ratios of water to biomass – 3:1, 6:1, 12:1 and 16:1. The obtained solid products were characterized with respect to their fuel properties. The best results were obtained for the temperature of 220 °C and showed a noticeable improvement in fuel properties – especially grindability and lowered ash content. The influence of water to biomass ratio was not so explicit and while high ratio showed an improvement in all mentioned properties, low ratio allowed to achieve the highest energy yield. The results obtained for miscanthus wet torrefaction and the literature data for dry torrefaction were compared.
