Fakt, że rozwój nauki możliwy jest jedynie wówczas, gdy zapewni się dostęp do wyników i wniosków z przeprowadzanych badań, od dawna znany jest w środowisku naukowym. W latach dziewięćdziesiątych ubiegłego stulecia refleksja ta stała się impulsem do powstania ruchu Open Access (OA) i budowania pierwszych otwartych archiwów, mających przyspieszyć przepływ informacji. W artykule przybliżono założenia idei OA, przyczyniającej się do popularyzacji wiedzy oraz jej rozwoju; na przykładzie Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego przedstawiono sposób funkcjonowania repozytoriów, korzyści płynące z publikowania w otwartym dostępie, oraz wskazano miejsce, jakie repozytoria instytucjonalne mogą zajmować w komunikacji naukowej.

The fact that the development of science is possible only when access is made to the results and the conclusions associated with the research which was conducted has been familiar for a long time in the scholarly community. In the 1990s this reflection became an impulse for the establishment of the Open Access movement (OA) and for the construction of the first open archives which were supposed to accelerate the flow of information. The article familiarises the reader with the premises of the OA concept which contributes to the popularisation of knowledge and its development, it presents on the basis of the example of the Jagiellonian University Repository the manner of the functioning of repositories, the benefits which are associated with the opportunity to publish works in the open access framework and it indicates the position which institutional digital libraries may assume in scholarly communication.

Created since 2013, the Jagiellonian University Repository is constantly undergoing transformation and dynamically developing. The article presents the current stage of development of the Repository with an indication of the changes that have taken place since the beginning of its existence and reflection on what will happen in the future. It describes the organization of resources, the principles of functioning, the procedures for entering data into the RUJ and the possibility of using them in various types of statistic and parametric compilations.
