The aim of the study was to present carpal flexural deformity cases in dogs, which are seldom reported in literature, from the clinical and biochemical point of view. Carpal flexural deformity was determined in a total of 31 puppies, of which 28 were brought to our clinic and 3 reported by a practicing veterinary surgeon. The puppy's ages ranged between 6-24 weeks, and they belonged to 10 different breeds. Following clinical and radiological examination of the puppies, blood samples were taken and calcium, phosphorus and magnesium values were recorded. Slight increases in these mineral values were determined in some of the patients. A splint with a caudal aluminum support, padded with a large amount of cotton, was applied to all puppies with deformity. This splint was kept on for 10 days and repeated in some cases. The study indicated that lesions can be prevented by applying a light splint in the early stages of deformity and that when dietary planning with balanced commercial foods is enforced deformity does not recur in later stages.

The material for this study comprised 5 dogs between the ages of 5-9 months and 1 cat aged 1.5 years brought to the I.U. Veterinary Faculty Surgery Department Clinic between the years 1996-2005, with the inability to use their hindleg. The cases were presented to the clinic within a few days following the occurence of the lesion. Case histories revealed the causes to be jumping from a height in 4 animals and unknown in 2. A diagnosis of avulsion fracture of the tibial tuberosity was reached following clinical and radiological examination of the cases. Surgical intervention was carried out in all cases, of which fixation was achieved with a screw application in 5 cases and the tension band method using double Kirschner pins and cerclage wire in 1 case. In the clinical and radiographical follow-up approximately 2-4 month after the operation the trouble-free recovery of the patients was established in the light of the information given by the patient owners. There was no problem with respect to the limbs bearing weight in any of the cases. Therefore, no need was seen to remove the fixation material. In conclusion, the authors hope that it will be beneficial to veterinary practice to present the successful results achieved in the fixation of avulsion fracture of the tibial tuberosity using screws in 5 cases and the tension band method in 1 case, as well as reporting the rarely encountered lesion in cats.

The aim of the study was an early diagnosis of bones with retained endochondral ossification through clinical and radiological examinations, in order to determine the factors causing the etiology of disease and to indicate necessary precautions to be taken in the prophylaxis of the resulting possible deformations. This study comprised of 51 dogs of different breeds, age and genders, brought to the clinic and complaining of gait abnormality or abnormal bone structure and which were subsequently diagnosed with retained endochondral ossification. Radiological examination indicated that while varying degrees of retained endochondral ossification were observed in the distal ulnar growth plates in all cases, retained endochondral ossification was present in the distal radial growth plate together with the ulna in one case and in all the growth plates in another case. It was established that 22 cases had left their mothers at an early age and been fed meat products and that 17 cases had received additional calcium and phosphorus in their diets. Following clinical and radiological examination, bilateral carpal valgus was diagnosed in 43 cases and bilateral carpal varus in 8 cases. Radius curvus deformation was also observed in cases where the condition had lasted for a long time. Ulnar ostectomy was performed in 18 cases diagnosed with retained endochondral ossification in the ulna and had not yet reached maturity. Seventeen cases in which the lesions were only in the beginning phase were treated by a change of diet. It was concluded that growth ceased temporarily in bones with retained endochondral ossification and that measures should be taken to avoid possible deformation, and, additionally, that feeding played a significant role in the etiology of the disease.
