Test results of performance characteristics of rapeseed fuels - methyl esters of rapeseed oil - and the mixtures thereof with diesel fuels have been presented. Using diesel engines, the broad variety experiments were carried out in the following conditions: engine test bench, traction, simulation tests, operation of truck, passenger car and tractors, the results were used to estimate the technical possibilities of rapeseed fuel using in Poland. Fuelling the diesel engines, in common operating conditions of vehicles and other units, provides possibility of verification of technical and ecological effectiveness resulting from using of rapeseed fuels.
Drafts of specifications - CEN standards for FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) based diesel fuel and heating oil have been presented. It was found that standards have many deficiencies and even significant defects in the area of chosen test method, types of requirements and limits. Some general notes that could be a base for more detailed correction of the standard drafts EN 14 213 and EN 14 214 have been described. As a result is postulate not to implement standards in this form by Poland, because of possible consequences.
Current state and prospects of use of alternative fuels, made from biomass in western countries and in Poland have been presented. Progress in technology - more effective synthesis process and economical, agro-political, and ecological reasons give strong motivation for using oil plants as a raw material in fuels and lubricating oils manufacture. In Poland, although a lot of tests were carried, production of such fuels hasn't started yet. To form a proper judgement, a situation for starting of rapeseed fuel production in Poland have been considered.
