The findings of a sociological research of university students in Slovakia show that a substantial majority chose to study of their own free will. Instrumentally, they see studying as a tool for acquiring an interesting profession with a good salary and good social conditions. A half of students enter university with adequate expectations of the difficulty of the study programme. Neverthless a great proportion of students consider their university course more demanding than they had expected, the problems concentrating in the first year of the study programme. Students also claim that they did not have a chance of presonal contact with their teacher even though it was needed. There is a disagreement between students’ expectations and the reality of work organisation in the first year of university study. There is a lack of university study propedeutics (introduction into studying university).

The issue of long-term youth unemployment in the Slovak Republic is considered to be a problem that can be solved by adopting a new intergenerational social contract. Youth policy after 1993 allowed young people to respond adequately to the challenges of modernization of the three sectors in the new literacy: language, computer and civil. There has been no response from the state policy to the new civilization challenge, which is the result of long-term unemployment: Gaining the ability to work. The author justifies the need for the development of specific program transition (transition from school to work). It should start with projects encouraging parents to engage their children in domestic work and community service in the village, we could go on with a wide range of small jobs for pupils and students during secondary school education and could culminate in restoring experienced apprenticed mobility of graduates in the area of unified Europe.

The ICCS 2009 international research project is focused on how young people in various countries prepare to fulfil their civil roles in the 21st Century. This study consists of research on the knowledge and attitudes of 14-year-old Slovak pupils (a sample of 2970 respondents) towards Europe and the European Union. The goal was to find answers to the following two questions: “What do Slovak pupils know about Europe and the European Union?“ and “What is the attitude of Slovak pupils toward Europe and the European Union?“ Slovak pupils’ knowledge highly surpasses the international average. The attitude of Slovak pupils to Europe and the European Union is very open. They are interested in EU affairs and appreciate the EU's contribution to the development of Slovak society in all of the areas measured. Slovak youth is optimistic about the challenges of European integration related to the debt crisis in some EU member states and about the united currency stability after 2010, mainly thanks to the outcomes achieved in 2009 resulting from Slovakia's membership in the EU.
