The main aim of the present paper is to investigate and describe the nature of synaesthetic devices employed by Vladimir Nabokov evident in his letters to his wife – Vera Slonim. The analysis of the language and style of the matrimonial intimate correspondence, written for one reader only, is expected to provide evidence allowing one to establish whether the numerous variants of perceptual synaesthesia employed by Nabokov in all his literary texts reflect his genuine synaesthetic experiences or whether such can only serve as examples of the writer’s passion for creating a kind of perceptual play on words and puzzles.

The present paper analyses two currents of philosophy of language: ‘individualistic subjectivism’ and ‘abstract objectivism’, described in Marxism and the Philosophy of Language. The book by Voloshinov and Bakhtin is considered as the attempt to construct the Marx’s linguistics after the Revolution of 1917. The authors present the antinomy between the ‘individual subjectivism’ and ‘abstract objectivism’, or in other words, between the two opposite approaches to language as a specific object of scientific inquiry. The two currents are observed from the perspective of the general anti-Saussurean movement in Soviet linguistics and literary studies of the late 1920s.

The paper aims at presenting the set of vocabulary from the field of green colour and analysing its semantic value. The selected lexical material represents ten short stories by Vladimir Nabokov: The Wood-Sprite, Russian Spoken Here, Sounds, Wingstroke, Gods, Word, The Seaport, Revenge, Beneficence and A Matter of Chance. In the article, the main attention is focused on describing the way in which the writer creates the world in his literary texts. As it is shown, colours are indispensable part of Nabokov’s prose. The distribution of the green colour and modification of its shades as well as the use of green colour in metonymic expressions testify to the Nabokov’s idea that there is no “generic difference between poetry and artistic prose”.

The paper aims at presenting basic considerations referred to blending theory, on the material of articles in press published during the electoral campaign in 2005 in Poland. As it has been demonstrated, studying the mental architecture of metaphorical constructions offers access to many challenging aspects of cognitive semantics. In this paper it has been analysed the meaning of a specific metaphor in the background of the blending theory by Fauconnier and Turner, as well as the semiotic mental space theory (network) designed by Line Brandt and Per Aage Brandt.

The paper presents functions of personal proper nouns in the literary text of ‘Chłopi’ by Wladysław Stanisław Reymont as well as their equivalents in the Russian language translation of the novel. The author classifies the literary proper nouns according to the techniques used by the translator – M. Abkina. The analytical part, which focuses on Polish forms of anthroponyms and methods of their translation, includes the characterization of the language shape of personal proper names used by Reymont in his novel and distinguishes the groups of names, hypocoristics, surnames, names of wives, daughters, sons and families, and nicknames. All the groups have been considered from the perspective of methods used during their translation into Russian. Consequently, the author analyses translation (when proper names become the source and basis of reconstruction of the appellative vocabulary), transposition to Russian language system and translocation with no change of their sound or structure. As it has been proved, translocation turns out to be the technique which makes it possible to preserve and maintain the national cultural values of the novel by Reymont. The conclusion of the article discusses the results of the translator’s choices made in the process of translation.

The objective of the paper is to present the significance of non-linguistic aspects in the process of translation of slang ('the third language') - an artificial language made up by an author as a tool of communication among the characters. As it has been proved, the translator is forced to take into consideration a socio-political associations as well as language tendencies typical of a target language society. The strategies and devices used by the translator come from Polish and Russian versions of Burgess's A Clockwork Orange.

The objective of the paper is to present an analysis of the process of translation of a Polish poetic text by Michal JoZwiak into the environment of Russian language and Russian associations. This illustration proves that the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics can be profitably applied in translation studies. One of the fundamental concepts in literary studies, and at the same time in cognitive understanding of language and grammar is imagery. As it has been shown, seen in terms of imagery, the process of translation becomes more like an individual interpretation of a text than a reproduction of the meaning included in its original version.
