The aim of this article is to examine the origin of “hot nationalism” in the Balkans. Undoubtedly, this kind of nationalism was the final element of the Balkan Wars, that erupted in 1912. The author presents the hypothesis that all Balkan conflicts have in common many factors. First of all, they were leading to develop of the modern nationalism. The ethnic cleansing, which were conducted during the Balkans Wars became the origin of the next Balkan conflicts in XX and XXI centuries. Furthermore, the most important acts of cruelty, violations, rapes, murders are being described along with the overall as it is being manifested in the case of Macedonia. The crucial source of this article constitutes The other Balkan Wars. A 1913 Carnegie Endowment inquiry in retrospect with a new introduction and reflections on the present conflict by George F. Kennan, written in Washington 1993, based on Carnegie Commission Report (1914), whose authors emphasized that “hot nationalism” manifested itself on the field of battle, drew on deeper traits of character inherited, presumably, from a distant tribal past, a tendency to view the outsider, with dark suspicion, and to see the political opponent as a fearful and implacable enemy to be rendered harmless only by total and unpitying destruction. The author asks the question if the “Eastern nationalism”, the most ferocious nationalism, still causes the threat to the security not only in the South Europe but also in the Old Continent?

The aim of this paper is to present a paradigm according to which Bosnia and Herzegovina can be seen as a mirror in which the multifaceted problems of Turkey as the ”sick person of Europe” are reflected. Contributing to the Turkish withdrawal from the Balkans, however, the Ottoman legacy characterized by political and cultural fragmentation permanently became a part of the history of the Balkans and influenced its fate in the 21st century. The author, on the basis of the studies of the American, Polish, Turkish, Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian historians examines the factors that determined the end of Ottoman rule in the Balkans. Bosnia and Herzegovina should be considered the key to the analysis of the Eastern crisis (1875-1878), which proved to be a mere preludes prelude to the end of the Ottoman Empire. The characteristic feature of this province was its permanent insubordination against Turkey, visible in a great number of revolts and uprisings of different provenance against the Turkish government. Already at the beginning of the 17th century, increasing corruption and taxes imposed on the Muslim population led to the first protests against the government. In the 17th century the great uprisings of Bosnian Muslims took place in the following years: 1636, 1650, 1682. In Herzegovina unrest and riots were reported in the following years: 1711, 1727, 1728, 1729, 1732. The Ottoman sources confirmed the occasional participation of the Christian population in those riots. On the one hand, the Muslim feudal lords, who were opposed to the reforms of the Sultan and fought to maintain their privileges, acted against the central power. On the other hand, rebellions had the character of the people’s liberation movement. The largest peasant revolt against the Muslim feudal lords from 1875 in Herzegovina rapidly evolved into the rise of Christian peasants all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the same time, the uprising became the South Slavic war of liberation from Turkish rule, contributing to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

Chinese activity in the Balkans in the 21st century and its implications. The paper aims to present how China’s multi-sectoral engagement in the Balkans is expressed as well as to show its significance for the development of this region. The Balkans are important for powerful players, due to their geopolitical and geostrategic location at the crossroads of communication routes between continents. China strongly influences the economic sphere of the countries on the Peninsula and uses the tools of public diplomacy to reduce the influence of other important players: the EU, Russia and the United States in the region. The author hypothesizes that China, like the United States at the end of the 20th century, tries to build a sphere of its influence on the Balkan Peninsula in the era of globalization. The Balkans could be the “gateway” to further Chinese expansion in Europe.
