The Lublin Region is the cradle of ancient mining, dating as far back as the Palaeolith. Until the beginning of the Iron Age, cherts from siliceous chalky limestones in the River Vistula Valley were the basic supply for the various tools and weaponry. Prehistorie artisans, aware of the mechanical properties of chert-bearing rocks and knowing how to mechanically processing hard cherts, fostered the development of regional settlement, construction and mining. The availability of common carbonate rocks of the Upper Cretaceous and Neocene made a significant impact on the defensive, religious and residential construction industry of the Lublin region. The unique mining technologies transformed the natural space on the one hand, and on the other provided a stimulus for the development of the local processing industry, transport, architecture and culture. In the 19th century, the Lublin region was a pioneer of the Polish cement industry. From the very beginning of the process, we can find examples of an ingenious combination of the engineering, geological and mining knowledge which have had such a strong presence in the region's cultural heritage.
