The article presents the history of Zbigniew Herbert’s work on the prose miniature devoted to mythological Narcissus. The analysis of the preserved manuscript versions serves to illustrate the multi-layer process of reinterpretation of the myth. Herbert in the “laboratory of the draft” tested various concepts of this reinterpretation. The Herbert’s text on Narcissus published in print reveal only to a limited degree the scale of the author’s invention in deconstructing and transforming the canonical versions of the Greek myth.

Artykuł przedstawia historię pracy Zbigniewa Herberta nad prozatorską miniaturą poświęconą postaci mitologicznego Narcyza. Analiza zachowanych wersji rękopiśmiennych służy unaocznieniu wielowariantowości procesu reinterpretacji mitu. Herbert w „laboratorium brulionu” testował rozmaite koncepty reinterpretacyjne. Herbertowskie teksty o Narcyzie ogłoszone drukiem tylko w niewielkim stopniu ujawniają skalę autorskiej inwencji w dekonstruowaniu i przekształcaniu kanonicznych wersji greckiego mitu.

This article chronicles the travails of Zbigniew Herbert during the process of writing his short prose piece depicting the image of the mythological Narcissus. An analysis of the extant versions of the manuscript serves as a telling illustration of how multivariate the reinterpretation of this myth can be. In the laboratory of his notebook, Herbert experimented with multifarious avenues of such conceptual reimagining. Those of Herbert’s texts about Narcissus which have actually been released in print are only narrowly reflective of the enormous scope of his protean creativity in the deconstruction and transformation of the canonical version of this Greek myth.

The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne”, vol. 59 (2011), issue 1 The article is a suggestion for an interpretation of Czesław Miłosz’s poem Biel (Whiteness) (from the volume Miasto bez imienia (City Without a Name). The accepted methodology of interpretation tries to find and define the zone of mediation between the ideal of comprehensive reading, striving after integrating and structuralizing the global meaning of the work, and the suggestions coming from post-structuralist philosophy of reading texts. The author’s own interpretation of the poem has been taken into consideration; a comparative reading of Biel has been suggested as well as of a Miłosz’s later poem Powrót do Krakowa w roku 1880 (Return to Krakow in 1880). This comparison is supposed to serve showing different strategies of creating texts and meanings used by the author of Nieobjęta ziemia (Unattainable Earth). At the same time, at the background, a commentary to Miłosz’s poem becomes an opportunity to construct a meta-interpretative reflection. Looking at his own reading the author formulates remarks concerning the process of reading and comprehending, he introduces and analyzes the metaphor of “interpretation as feeling settled.”

The article proposes a parallel, comparative reading of two texts: the Polish nonfiction story Zaraza (1965) by Jerzy Ambroziewicz and the English essay The Last Days of Smallpox: Tragedy in Birmingham (2018) by Mark Pallen. The texts discuss, respectively, a smallpox epidemic which took place in Wrocław (1963) and an outbreak of the same disease in Birmingham (1978). The present paper studies the similarities and discrepancies in the methods of describing the represented world, narrative techniques, poetics, and rhetoric. The final part of the paper poses the question of how both of these “smallpox stories” may be interpreted in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Artykuł proponuje równoległą, porównawczą lekturę dwu tekstów: polskiego reportażu Zaraza (1965), autorstwa Jerzego Ambroziewicza oraz angielskiego eseju The Last Days of Smallpox: Tragedy in Birmingham (2018), autorstwa Marka Pallena. Teksty te poświęcone są, odpowiednio, epidemii czarnej ospy we Wrocławiu (1963) oraz zalążkowi epidemii tej samej choroby w Birmingham (1978). Przedmiotem porównania są podobieństwa i różnice w zakresie sposobu przedstawiania świata, technik narracyjnych, poetyki i retoryki. W zakończeniu postawione zostaje pytanie o sposób czytania obu „ospowych opowieści” w okresie pandemii COVID-19.

The article regards the late Zbigniew Herbert’s poem entitled Dwaj prorocy. Próba głosu (The Two Prophets. The Attempt of the Voice). The author tries to prove that this poem resists interpretations seeking to create a clear and coherent analysis of its meaning. The article also focuses on a theoretical question: Can the draft of a poem prove useful in interpreting the finished and published literary work? The article was produced as part of the grant program entitled “The Zbigniew Herbert Archive – studies on documenting the creative writing process”.

The article is an attempt at a close reading of the poem 17 czerwca (“17 June”) by Czesław Miłosz. The author starts with a versological analysis, supposed to indicate in what way the poet achieved the tonal effects in the text. The interpretation that has been conducted makes visible a semantic unsolvability, which-according to the author-is born in the poem and, once discerned, cannot be easily neutralized.
