From the processed semen of 353 bulls, 137 antibiotic resistant bacterial strains were isolated. 124 strains were penicillin and 89 streptomycin resistant. Bacteria isolated from fresh semen were examined for penicillin, streptomycin and gentamycin resistance, then semen was conserved (penicillin and streptomycin were added) and then the resistance of reisolated bacterial strains to penicillin, streptomycin and gentamycin was evaluated. From the fresh semen 21 penicillin and 9 streptomycin resistant strains were isolated. However, from these same samples of semen afer thawing 10 bacterial strains resistant to penicillin and 6 strains resistant to streptomycin were reisolated. All isolated bacterial strains were gentamycin sensitive.

Опираясь на результаты более ранних собственных исследований, выполнено дальнейшие работы, целью которых было определение бактериостати- стического действия антибиотиков, добавляемых к замороженному семени. В опыте учтено темпера- . турные условия и период времени, в котором семя остается перед замороживанием. Добавка самого цитрато-желточного растворителя не влияла на дальнейшее намножение бактерий, растворитель же с добавкой 1000 м.е. пенициллина и 1000 µг стрептомицина вызывал торможение роста бактериальной.

Our previous work revealed that in some cases substantial number of bacteria was growing in routinely prepared semen although antibiotics were added. In the presented experiment semen was controlled after 30 min and 4 h after dilution. Standard doses of penicillin (1000 iu) and streptomycin (1000 ug) per ml of diluent were used. The growth of bacteria was totally inhibited in 30% of samples and very effectively in the remaining controlled samples. It was concluded that when semen was processed in accordance to the rules the inhibitory activity of antibiotics was considerable but not complete.

В 1972—1985 гг. провели бактериологический кон­троль 1081 эякулята из семени, привезенного из 19 стран. С 1979 г. отметилось постепенное понижение числа сильно загрязненных эякулятов, что, кажет­ся, указывает на рост заботы о гигиене продукции семени.

One thousand and eighty one ejaculates imported from 19 countries were examined bacteriologically in years 1972—1985. From 1979 a definite drop in the number of contaminating bacteria was found. It was concluded that generally more attention was paid to the hygienic conditions in the process of semen pro­duction.

The aim of the studies was to determine the sex of cattle embryos by identifying Y-chromosome specific DNA sequence using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The sex of embryos fertilized in vitro and produced from the stage 2b up to hatched blastocyst was determined. Also the comparison of whole embryos and biopsed parts of them was performed. A total of 336 embryos was used. The sex of the embryos was determined with similar accurancy using a few biopsed cells as the whole embryo. The number of male and female embryos differed with the stage of development. In the stage of expanding blastocysts the ratio of male to female blastocysts was from 39.6% to 60.4% ( p s 0.5). In the group of hatched blastocysts the opposite situation was found, namely 62.5 % male and 37.5% female blastocysts (p s 0.01).
