The aim of this paper is to describe the rules determining the cooperation between a lowest level ground commander, of a company or platoon, with a joint terminal attack controller. The author describes the fundamental challenges that they both need to face, as well as the tactical and technical capabilities of a joint terminal attack controller unit with the resulting limitations and ways of overcoming them. The paper analyses the latest binding instructions from the point of view of the author, who has practical experience related to close air support. Careful attention is paid to the principal role of efficient exchange of information between a commander and a joint terminal attack controller, as well as to the lack of adequate training on the part of officers with regard to cooperation with the air force.
