Equivalent Culture-Anchored Units Translation? The Phraseological Units IssueThis article examines a question that has been of long-standing interest to linguists working in the fields of cross-linguistic phraseology and the translation of idiosyncratic language units, such as phraseological units (PUs). The challenge of translating PUs, which are understood as "patterns sanctioned by a given culture", involves the translation of culturemes. Therefore, a good translator must be able to assess the importance of the elements containing cultural references in the source language while "moving" them to the target language. When translating PUs, it is desirable that interlingual (cross-linguistic) equivalence be achieved. The fact that translations of a PU can be very different (the translator can paraphrase the text, creatively change it, or simply eliminate the PU) implies that the translational equivalence of PUs must be functional. While a cross-linguistic comparison (and the achievement of translational equivalence) of PUs can be made by omitting the form parameter, it is desirable to preserve the extension and semantic structure, the connotative-pragmatic component, and the phrase combinatorics. Kwestia jednostek frazeologicznychArtykuł porusza zagadnienie, które od kilkudziesięciu lat cieszy się zainteresowaniem językoznawców zajmujących się konfrontacją językową frazeologii oraz tłumaczeniem idiosynkratycznych jednostek językowych, takich jak jednostki frazeologiczne (JF). Wyzwaniem podczas tłumaczenia JF, rozumianych jako "wzorce sankcjonowane przez daną kulturę", jawi się konieczność tłumaczenia kulturemów. Tłumacz zatem stoi w obliczu konieczności prawidłowej oceny danego elementu pod względem jego odniesień kulturowych w języku źródłowym podczas przekładania JF na język docelowy. Podczas tłumaczenia JF pożądane jest osiągnięcie międzyjęzykowej (cross-linguistic) ekwiwalencji. Fakt, że tłumaczenie JF może być wielorakie (tłumacz może parafrazować tekst, twórczo go zmienić lub po prostu wyeliminować JF), oznacza, że ekwiwalencja przekładu JF musi być funkcjonalna. Chociaż podczas międzyjęzykowego porównania (mającego na celu osiągnięcie translacyjnej równoważności) JF ich forma jest rzeczą drugorzędną, to wskazane jest, aby zachować ich rozszerzenie znaczeniowe i strukturę semantyczną, aspekt konotacyjno-pragmatyczny oraz łączliwość.

This paper concerns the situation of multilingualism in Spain, with particular emphasis on its legal regulations. Nowadays around half of the Spanish population live in bilingual or multilingual areas. The situation of the country’s multilingualism is reflected in relevant legal acts and in the Spanish Constitution itself. The reality of a multilingual society is included in the legal system and is reflected in all spheres of social life. The process of regional language recovery in the Iberian Peninsula is also often associated with the demands of regional independence (e.g. in Catalonia or the Basque Country). The concept of multilingualism thus becomes a hostage of itself and seems to undermine the principle of pluralism. Is the Spanish model effective and what are the principles it is based on?

Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy sytuacji wielojęzyczności w Hiszpanii, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem regulacji prawnych jej dotyczących. Obecnie na terytorium Królestwa Hiszpanii około połowa mieszkańców Hiszpanii zamieszkuje obszary dwu- lub wielojęzyczne. Sytuacja wielojęzyczności kraju odzwierciedlona jest w stosownych aktach prawnych oraz w samej konstytucji Królestwa. Rzeczywistość wielojęzycznego społeczeństwa ujęta jest w systemie prawnym oraz odzwierciedla się we wszystkich sferach życia społecznego. Proces rewindykacji języków regionalnych na Półwyspie Iberyjskim jest też często związany z postulatami niezawisłości regionów (np. w Katalonii lub w Kraju Basków). Koncepcja wielojęzyczności staje się zatem zakładniczką samej siebie i wydaje się podminowywać odgórną zasadę pluralizmu. Czy model hiszpański jest skuteczny i jakie stoją za nim przesłania?

The new European legal context prompted the creation of an original terminology within the existing Polish and Spanish legal language. As far as legal translation and the methods used in the specialized translation are concerned, it is crucial to remember that the law as science and a culture element of each nation has its own language. One of the most effective and essential tools in the work of each legal translator are bilingual dictionaries. Notwithstanding, lexicographical resources, which should support the translator, often lack adequate equivalent. That is why, conducting studies based on the Polish-Spanish and Spanish-Polish bilingual dictionaries in the context of linguistic analysis of lexical equivalents seems reasonable. The article approaches the phenomenon of equivalence or the lack of equivalence of selected lexical units in the legal field in order to demonstrate existing tools within general or specialized dictionaries available to – in our particular case – Polish translators whose working language is Spanish.

Culturemes and Non-Equivalent Lexis in DictionariesThe article raises the question of the need to improve the structural diversity and operational capabilities of the modern dictionary (bi- or multilingual) to avoid lacunes in the transmission of culturemes and non-equivalent words into another language. Without it the dictionary is incomplete and languages are unequal. The article deals with various options of asymmetry reflection of the culturemes in the context of social and ethno-psychic reality of a native-speaking community. The specifics of lexicographical transmission is observed in order to emphasize the need of further investigation of the linguistic map of the world.
