EN
Household work has been often seen as a mere technique for fulfilling basic needs of households. This paper questions that reductionism in analysis of domestic activities. By presenting the works of Lévi-Strauss and Douglas the paper focuses on some symbolic properties of the household tasks. It shows how these activities express relations between nature and culture, give information about social categories and their boundaries as well as about exclusion and inclusion of individuals within and outside families. It is proposed that from the point of view of everyday life various social meanings of housework might be revealed. Domestic tasks are thus described as culturally relative activities whose social definition differs among families and phases of family course. In the conclusion it is suggested that such research approach could also contribute to the study of gender aspects of domestic labour.

Two spheres of social regulation are analysed in the study: the environment protection and agriculture. In the last decades, both of these areas have become frequently discussed topics in the media and in the public debates. Representatives of the environmental movements as well as the scientists have played an important role in promoting an environmental agenda in the political arena. The environmental aspects of the human activities have been incorporated into many legislative acts and regulations. The European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has also been modified to fulfil the environmental requirements. The new concept of multifunctional agriculture, introduced in the reformed CAP, aspires to reflect the principle of sustainable development that seeks to take the economical, social, and environmental facets of agriculture equally into consideration. Focusing on the case of northern Slovakia, we analysed the context of launching the reformed CAP into agricultural practice using the example of the implementation of agro-environmental measures. Drawing on interviews with local farmers, we conclude that the main barrier to enlarging the participation in agro-environmental schemes is not due to the farmers' attitude to environmental or economic aspects, but to the social conditions of their agricultural enterprise.

The article introduces the conceptual categories of contentious politics which provide for relational and reflexive analysis of collective political action. Such categories of analysis contain necessary normative distance, which enables the inclusion of such phenomena that have not been analytically scrutinized by the empirically exclusive and normatively charged conceptual categories of civil society and the new social movements. The article also discusses the selected aspects of environmental contention in Slovakia, focusing on the framing processes and interactions of the contested agendas and on their (de)politicizing potentials.
