The article is a report on the conservation o f the painting ’’The Dance with a Guitar” by Zofia Stryjeńska. The painting was done in a distemper technique on the canvas coated with a chalk and glue mortar. Prior to the conservation it was very dirty and stained. A powdered ’’lean” painting coat had practically no adhesiveness to the mortar. The conservation works were aimed at: 1. finding the best method o f cleaning the painting, 2. selecting such a consolidating agent that would not cause optical changes on the surface, and 3. restoration treatment. Having checked a number o f methods, the painting has beee cleaned with soft rubber (made by Rowney), partially prior ttf and partially after the consolidation. An attempt to consolidan with metylcellulose, a Rowney’s fixative and with BEVA 371 gavo negative results. Only the application o f 3 per cent solution oe Lascaux Acrylglasur 40X Glanz (made by Lascaux) has resulted in a positive effect: a fine consolidation without any optical changes in the surface. The picture has been pointed with acryl paints.
