Reduction of natural flood areas surface, being the result of progressing and often chaotic development of river valleys, should be considered as one of the most important reasons for the increase of economic and social damages in the event of flood. The development of flood areas in the Oder valley led to the loss of important surfaces of natural retention. Their further elimination will increase the flood risk and damages and negatively influence precious natural environment. Such process may be prevented by efficient use of the flood areas maps in the spatial development.
