The following articles presents the role of the consumer. In creating the competitive tage of companies on the market. The main attention was focused on discussing the possibilities and ways of shaping long term relationships with customers as the essential element of competition strategy. According to the authoress a modern consumer is not a passive object of marketing activities but a demanding market partner awaiting the optimal fulfillment of their wishes, constant dialogue and communication based on reliable information and mutual trust. The key elements deciding about the market advantage of the company should include individualized product offer and creating and delivering the values to the customers.

In the following article an attempt has been made to review important research and theories concerning the consumer behavior from the 19 th century until the present days. A number of particular theoretical concepts have frequently been characterized by various assumptions regarding the nature of the consumer, the specifications of their decisions as well as the range of their behavior factors. Special attention has been paid to microeconomic theories and concepts influenced by psychology. General speaking, on the basis of the analysis one could come to the conclusion that the consumer behaviors cannot be forseen and explained only by investigating the laws of economy without considering any of the psychological variables such as attitudes, motives or perception. The sources are mainly the data from extensive and interesting bibliography on the subject.

In the following publication the results of empirical research are presented. Their purpose was to define the consumer ethnocentrism level of the inhabitants in Poland, Hungary and Ukraine. The main source material was achieved thanks to direct interviews in three towns: Rzeszów (Poland), Debrecen (Hungary), Iwano-Frankowsk (Ukraine), on the sample of 1200 respondents (400 people in every town). International CETSCALE questionnaire has been used as a measuring instrument. It was validated. The analyses presented clearly show ethnocentric tendencies, however, the highest CET scale values were achieved in the Ukrainian community. There is also a meaningful influence of socio-economic factors on the level of ethnocentrism in the three researched groups.

The purpose of this study is to discuss the process of segmentation of market selling non-alkoholoc drinks. The selection of certain segments of this market was carried out on the ground behaviour criteria such as consumers preferences regarding marks of products, the factors connected with a choice of certain marks of product and consumers expectations regarding features of products. A special attention was drawn to the presentation of the research method used in the procedure of segmentation cluster analysis, available in a package of statistic programmes called STATISTICA 6.0. It showed a graphic presentation of three – dimensional structures presented in a form of special trees with a certain number of branches on particular levels of affinity. The basic empirical material was based on the results of the fest which was performed among 490 adults from Małopolska region. A direct survey was carried out in order to gather the whole information.

W artykule omówiono istotę etnocentryzmu konsumenckiego. Zaprezentowano metodologię badawczą tego zjawiska, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem CETSCALE, i dokonano przeglądu wybranych badań empirycznych prowadzonych wśród konsumentów polskich. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono badaniom bezpośrednim (wywiad indywidualny) zrealizowanym w regionie Podkarpacia na próbie 400 respondentów. Na kanwie przeprowadzonych analiz można wyciągnąć wniosek, że Polacy w swoich wyborach rynkowych wykazują postawy etnocentryczne. Widoczny jest również wpływ cech społeczno-ekonomicznych na poziom etnocentryzmu konsumenckiego badanej grupy.

This article discusses the nature of consumer ethnocentrism. The research methodology of this phenomenon with a particular emphasis on CETSCALE has been presented and a review of selected empirical studies conducted among Polish consumers has been done. A particular attention is paid to empirical research (individual interviews) conducted in the Podkarpacie region on the sample of 400 people. In general, based on the carried out analyses, it can be concluded that Poles in their market choices have ethnocentric attitudes. There has also been a clear effect of socio-economic characteristics on the level of consumer ethnocentrism of the group surveyed.
