The following article is devoted to Osyp Jurij Hordyński-Fed’kowycz (1834-1888), known as Jurij Fed’kowycz in Ukrainian literature, as well as social and cultural life. Birth books with records relating to the writer and his brother are in the Diocesan Archive in Zielona Góra, and for the first time they are published in this article. These records contain information on the baptism of the future writer in the church of St Peter and Paul the Apostles in Wyżnica, the history of the church itself, as well as other genetic and contact links of the author with Poland. Fed’kowycz also spoke Polish, was interested in Polish literature and folklore (which was interpreted by him in an original way) and maintained relations with certain activists of Polish culture. Articles about the Ukrainian writer appeared in Polish publications in Eastern Galicia and Poland itself; his poetic and prose works were also translated into Polish. In this way the Polish reader discovered the world of the Bukovina ethnic community and a quite original side of Ukrainian literature.
