Artists creating their works in the mid-19 th century Warsaw had to cope with the challenges brought about by the modernizing reality which they happened to be living in. They were obliged to seek clients or those wishing to buy ready-made works. They adjusted to the needs and mechanisms of the market; they extended the field of their professional activity, faced the competition of other artists, as well as of new technologies. Under the changing circumstances they could no longer be merely ‘priests at the altar of art’, since they needed to transform into producers responsible for selling their products, adjusting their skills and expertise to the needs and financial capacities of their potential clients. They had to embrace modern economy with its rules and laws. And it was this economy that particularly determined the situation of ‘mediocre artists’, who after all predominated among the group.

Art at the All-Poland Exhibition (or PWK) continuing to beperceived in accordance with a faith deeply seated in romanticism that it is the most valuable creation in the spiritual culture of the (Polish) nation had to find a suitably dignified place for itself at such a spectacular presentation of the recreated Polish State’s thus-far achievements. The Art Section, named at that time a ‘palace’ (Pałac Sztuki), was to be found next door to the Government Palace. The paper discusses works of art that were exposed in the Pałac Sztuki.

The paper aims at reconstructing the image of Maurycy Gottlieb created in the Polish press during the artist’s lifetime and immediately following his death. It is based on all the texts (from exhibition reviews, through obituaries and posthumous tributes) traceable in periodicals and dailies published in the three partition zones (in Warsaw, Lvov, Cracow, Poznań), which has allowed to present the whole abundance and variety of perspectives, both on Gottlieb’s art, and on him as a person.
