The aim of this study was to explain the correlations between selenium deficiency, hemostatic and biochemical disorders, and the progression of pathological changes in calves diagnosed with nutritional muscular dystrophy (NMD). The study was performed on 20 calves with supplementation of 8 ml selenium and vitamin E preparation and 20 calves with symptoms of NMD. Blood was sampled from calves aged 5, 12 and 19 days. On day 19, samples of the biceps femoris muscle were collected from 6 animals in each group for histopathological analysis. The following blood parameters were determined: PLT, PT, TT, APTT, fibrinogen and D-dimer concentrations, antithrombin III activity, glucose, selenium and vitamin E concentrations, activity of CK, LDH and GSH-Px. Muscle sections were stained with H&E and HBFP. Platelet counts were significantly lower in calves with symptoms of NMD. No significant differences in coagulation parameters were observed between the groups. Sick calves were diagnosed with hyperglycemia and elevation of CK and LDH activity. Selenium and vitamin E concentrations in the blood serum were significantly lower in the experimental group together with significant drop in GSH-Px activity. Changes characteristic of Zenker’s necrosis were observed in a muscle of the sick animals. To our best knowledge this is the first study in which the attempt was made to explain the relationship between selenium deficiency and changes in the coagulation system in ruminants.

Twenty bitches with acute endometritis-pyometra complex (EPC) and 20 clinically healthy bitches were examined. The following coagulation parameters were determined in haemostatic evaluations: prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), thrombin time (TT), fibrinogen concentrations (FBG), D-dimer concentrations (D-D), antithrombin activity (AT), and blood platelet counts (PLT). Morphological and biochemical blood parameters were also analysed. Examinations of animals affected by EPC revealed blood coagulation and fibrinolytic disorders, and the noted results (PT 13.7 ±1.06 s, aPTT 23.4 ±1.04 s, TT 15.6 ±0.68 s, FBG 2.2 g/L, D-D 785.4 ±103.05 µg/L, AT 111.1 ±13.51%, PLT 169.30 ±126.31 10³/µL) point to a high risk of disseminated intravascular coagulation. The findings indicate that the coagulation parameters of bitches affected by EPC should be analysed before treatment as the noted disorder can significantly complicate therapy and ovariohysterectomy, and endanger the patients' life.

The aim of the study was to determine the activity and effectiveness of bone marrow hematopoiesis in healthy, adult cattle, and to compare hematopoietic activity levels in diseased cattle. The experimental material comprised 10 high-yielding, clinically healthy Holstein-Friesian cows aged 2-3 years. Bone marrow aspirate smears were analyzed. Marrow samples were collected with a marrow biopsy needle with a length of 63 mm (13G, from the medullary cavity of the third and fourth rib in the sternal region, and the material was subjected to a smear test. Marrow and peripheral blood smears were stained by a method proposed by May Grünwald-Giemsa (MGG). An increase in the number of orthochromatic erythroblasts with a simultaneous decrease in basophilic and polychromatic erythroblast counts was noted in this study. The results indicate that the nucleoli of bovine proerythroblasts are less visible, and the cytoplasm is stained light blue.

Proper processes of hematopoiesis have a major impact on the results of blood morphological analyses in healthy animals. The aim of this study was to evaluate bone marrow smears of female fallow deer kept in captivity and comparing them to morphological analysis of peripheral blood. To achieve the aim of this study bone marrow was collected from 10 nonpregnant, 2-year-old female fallow deer. Smears stained by the May-Grünwald Giemsa method were analyzed. Bone marrow samples were collected using a biopsy needle from the 3rd-4th rib in the sternal region into test tubes without coagulant. Whole blood for hematological analysis was sampled from the external jugular vein into 2 ml test tubes containing K2 EDTA. The results of the research indicate significant morphological differences of white blood cells line and red blood cells line of fallow deer in comparison to other ruminants. Proerythroblasts of fallow deer appear to have a higher number of nuclei that stain more clearly in the MGG method. In red the blood cells line a high percentage of polychromatic erythroblasts (17.2%) and basophilic erythroblasts (8.19%) was noted. In granulocyte line only 0.97% of myeloblasts was observed in bone marrow smears. The percentage of segmented and band granulocytes was determined at 6.86% and 2.27% consequently. In the lymphoblastic line of fallow deer a low percentage of plazmocytes was observed (1.16%). In the platelets line the percentage of megakaryoblasts (5.85%) was lower than megakaryocytes (7.9%). This report is the first study concerning hematopoiesis in female fallow deer.
