Complete characteristics of the deformations of a tapered cantilever due to self weight are studied. Explicit stability criteria for pointy tapered columns and numerical results for the blunt columns are given. Asymptotic formulas for large deformations are derived, and the results compare well with those from numerical integration. It is found that the deformation depends heavily on a non-dimensional gravity parameter, the degree of taper and the cross sectional shape of the cantilever.

The nonlinear large deformation of a tip loaded tapered cantilever is studied. Different cross sectional shapes, deformation directions, tapers, base inclinations and end loads are considered. Explicit stability characteristic equations are given. Asymptotic analysis gives good approximations for large tip loads (p > 20). Deformation properties of the tapered cantilever are discussed.
The ponding on an inflated membrane tube is studied. Membrane tubes have the advantage of zero leakage and ease of transportation and set-up. A novel related problem is the membrane trough which can be used to contain water and does not need anchoring. These problems depend on two non-dimensional parameters which characterize membrane tension and pressure. Perturbation solutions to second order are found for shallow ponding, and compare well with those of exact numerical integration. Tables for the pertinent parameters are constructed and cross section geometries are found. This research illustrates the interaction of membrane structure, pressure load, and hydrostatics.
The effects of five levels of added α-linolenic acid (ALA) (0, 1, 2, performance, meat quality, fatty acids, mRNA 3, and 4 g · kg–1 diet, as-fed basis) in diets on growth performance, meat qualexpression ity, fatty acid composition of muscle and liver, and expression of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1 (CPT1) mRNA in the liver of growing meat rabbits were studied. A quadratic effect of ALA addition on average daily intake was found (P < 0.0001). ALA addition had a significant influence on muscle colour of longissimus lumborum (LL), including L*, a*, and b* (P < 0.0001, P = 0.0007, and P = 0.0120, respectively).
