The first publication of an academic textbook has always been an important event for teachers at universities for two reasons. Every new title is a help in the case of a lack of textbooks, and a well-designed and solidly edited didactic aid – as didactic practice shows – can serve well for many generations for decades. This article discusses the first Polish textbook on Swedish phonetics and phonology with regard to its content and the methodological solutions used. The results of the analysis can be helpful for anyone interested in making a purchase decision. The criteria of analysis include the following aspects in the field of philological competence: 1) selection and scope of the problem, which should provide a theoretical orientation in the questions of general and Swedish phonetics and phonology; 2) the typology and objective of the exercises, which should help to achieve certain skills in the field of pronunciation and phonetic transcription; 3) content components that enable the acquisition of social skills; 4) Didactic strategies and forms of teaching the linguistic knowledge and skills for students in the first year of study. In the discussion, the advantages of the book were emphasized and the deficiencies found were commented on so that teachers can easily compensate for them. Despite some weaknesses, the book represents an optimal combination of the analyzed characteristics and can be used as a useful textbook in academic didactic practice. The textbook is especially recommended to all students of Scandinavian and Neophilological Studies.

The article examines the emotive influence of visual elements on the reception of German and Danish grave inscriptions. The material basis of analysis are photos of tombstones from the 19th and 20th century from cemeteries in Saxony and Copenhagen. The methodological basis is the theory of multimodal text and the starting point of the analysis is the typology of image-text relationships, which is supplemented by further observations. The study analyzes representatives of different semantic classes of visual components from different time periods. Among the most expressive and impressive sculptural representations are those with references to eschatology and the person of the deceased. In their use, two distinct strategies can be noted: the strengthening of mourning mood and the repression of the picture of death.

This article is a review of a monograph on genological research on speech species. The objects of this publication are tomb inscriptions from over 60 necropolises in the north-eastern Lublin Region, which is situated within the borders of the Orthodox Lublin-Chelm Diocese and in the western part of the Volyn oblast in Ukraine. These are ethnically, linguistically, culturally and religiously non-homogeneous areas. The analysis takes into consideration the structure, the type of the functions fulfilled by grave inscriptions, the pragmatic aspect and cultural specificity of the analyzed texts. The subject of the review is to discuss the content of the publication and to implement the research goals undertaken by the author. In assessing the scientific value of the monograph, the current methodological solutions and the role of the study in the context of the state of research in Polish text linguistics were taken into account. The reviewed monograph is a reliable empirical study, however, the adopted description model does not take into account semiotic features that would complete the information about the analyzed texts. The book may be a contribution to Slavonic dialectological studies, especially to the indication of mutual Polish-Ukrainian interferences. It constitutes a source for studying the vocabulary of the borderland. The work may be used for comparative studies of funeral texts.
