The brand new technologies more frequently revolutionize the conservative fields of the navigation, such as ECDIS for instance. The term of "E-Navigation" in the different forms is omnipresent in the major parts of navigation, tried to substitute old-fashion technologies. The pilotage service is one of them, remains immutable in its novelty and stays conservative from many years. The author focused on the technical aspects of the system named Remote Pilotage System, as an aid to the in-shore and sea piloting methods. The content of this article is focused on the analysis of methods for the voice-way information communication to the navigator and the different interface figuration for the pilot. The described researches are the part of holistic method of navigational information communication analysis for the Remote Pilotage System Interface.

The main task carried out by the Pilot Navigation and Docking System is to provide the navigation information for the pilot or captain, during the vessel berthing. The form of presentation of such information may be implemented using various methods. The form of lighting arrays located on the quay is the least technical complicated method to present the navigational parameters of manoeuvring vessel. Much more advanced way of communication is the delivery of the necessary data on the manoeuvring vessel’s bridge, using the selected wireless data transmission technology. The visualization is done via dedicated device’s screen or commercial laptop, tablet, smartphone or mobile phone. The remainder of this article describes the construction, specifications and algorithm of wireless data segment intended for the commonly used mobile devices.

The ship technical failures contribution in overall number of navigational accidents are significantly smaller than those caused by human factor but in safety analysis they cannot be neglected. The paper presents methodology of modeling the technical failures of ships with respect of most important ship systems such as main engine, power generators and steering gear. The repair time is also taken into account. The data for simulation was obtained from analysis of ships statistical data of polish owners. The model could be used mostly in assessment with projecting phase of ship appliances, simulating owner’s economical analysis or generating random events in marine simulators.

The article presents a method of scaling up existing simulation tests results from ships withparameters L1, B1 (length and breadth) determining a safe waterway bend width (d1) to specify a width (d2) safe for ships with other dimensions L2, B2. This method enables accurate determination of the safe fairway width (d) in case it has been planned to increase maximum length and width of vessels without carrying out relatively expensive simulation tests. The method was used in designing the parameters ofthe modernized Swinoujscie-Szczecin fairway.

The article presents an original two-stage simulation method for the optimization of seaport parameters. Presentation of the method is based on example of parameter optimization of the outer container port in Świnoujście. Presented method uses two limitations of the objective function related to safety of manoeuvring and mooring of ships. It consist of two stages, first one is carried out for the parameters defined in the preliminary stage of design. On the basis of results from this stage, layout and other parameters of port waterways can be adjusted to satisfy assumed safety criteria. The second stage uses the parameters established in the first stage. It allows for small adjustments which will not change the safety of manoeuvring. The result of second stage is optimal parameters of the examined port waterways.

The known navigational systems in use and methods of navigational decision support perform information functions and as such are helpful in the process of safe conduct of a vessel. However, none of these known systems provides a navigator with ready solutions of collision situations taking account of all the vessels in the proximity of own ship, where the Collision Regulations apply. Another shortcoming of these systems is that they do not explain the assessment of a navigational situation and proposed manoeuvre parameters. Results of testing in simulation condition of NAVDEC — new Navigational Decision Supporting System developed by research team of prof. Pietrzykowski [Pietrzykowski et al., 2012a], [Pietrzykowski et al., 2012b] — were presented in this paper.

Modern Integrated Navigation Systems (INS) integrate information obtained from various sensors and functions. Processed data are presented on the computer display generally with the aim to increase navigator’s situation awareness and to reduce his/her workload. The investigations described in the paper were carried out to assess the advantages of the new functionality of the test INS (e-Navigation enhanced Integrated Navigation System ee-INS), developed in the EU financed EfficienSea Project, that looks and works like a standard ECDIS. This new functionality implements ‘Exchange of Intended Route’ service. The experiment was conducted in a full mission ship simulator environment with 20 experienced mariners. The bridge layout without ECDIS ‘Exchange of Intended Route’ functionality, and bridge layout with this functionality implemented, was applied in research and its results enabled to carry out their comparison. The navigators’ workload was measured by NASA-TLX method. Navigators’ situation awareness in respect to other ship’s state and the final passing distance were utilized to evaluate safety of navigation process.

The paper presents the development of a new simulation method to optimize bends in marine waterways. This method, using results of empirical research and simulation methods, would allow accurate determination of safe manoeuvring areas. The method was used at the stage of detailed design of parameters of the, which is undergoing modernization, to determine the optimum parameters of horizontal curves of the fairway. The study was conducted on the type of manoeuvring simulator called Polaris Kongsberg and attended by pilots from the Szczecin–Swinoujscie Pilot Station. Based on the studies carried out, the maximum safe ship length was determined for the redesigned waterway and the conditions for their safe operation. The maximum lengths of these ships are as follows: cruise Lc = 260 m, container Lc = 240 m and a bulk carrier Lc = 220 m.
