This paper deals with the naming and renaming in Prague subway. First Prague metro line was opened in 1974 and since that date the system of underground railway is being expanded. The last extension was in 2015, when four new stations were opened. Naming and renaming of metro stations are under the influence of extra-linguistic factors (e. g. political situation or ideology). The text discusses also the undesirable homonymy in naming of urban spaces. Sometimes we can see situation, when the metro station has the same name as some above-ground object, which is very distant. In this case the localizing designation is deceptive and divorced from the topographic reality.

The aim of the paper is to describe specific trends in the development of Prague street names following the end of the Second World War. The main purpose of the research is to show all topics, which arose in post-war society and which also influenced post-war street naming (e. g. eliminating symbols of Nazi Germany, celebrating of our west and east rescuers, laudation of dead heroes, turnover to hussite tradition, turnover to interwar Czechoslovakia etc.). The paper also shows examples of ideological and political influences on street naming after 1948.
