The paper is dealing with the character of J. I. Bajza, who is known for the authorship of the first Slovak novel and the first attempt to codify the Slovak language before Bernolák. Based on the collection of anecdotes, riddles and humoristic tales written by Bajza, named “Veselé účinky a rčení”, the author provides insight into the significance of Bajza ś work for the folkloric research. The collection includes the oldest texts of humoristic nature and riddles thus bringing forth records, which evidence the existence of multiple subjects in Slovak narrative culture. The paper explains the connection between anecdotes, riddles in said collection and folk narrative culture between the borders of literature and folklore.

The author analyzes Ľudovít V. Rizner´s Dialektický slovník bošácky, points to the circumstances behind its origin and its use in Slovak dialectology. The goal of this paper is to show Rizner´s writings, to this day unused, concerning extralinguistical information and broader contextual characteristics of explained phenomena. These unpublished lexicographical texts offer wide possibilities for broad ethno-liguistical research.

As a priest, J. Záborský (1812 – 1876) not only delivered sermons, but was also in daily direct contact with the members of his congregation. After briefly outlining the attitudes of the society and church towards the issue of the rich and still viable system of superstitions, the article analyses Záborský’s sermons and offers a look at specific forms of everyday life in rural areas of Slovakia in the mid-19th century. The two volumes of his collected sermons came out under the title Múdrosť života ve chrámových řečech [Wisdom of life in speeches in the temple] and were published in Vienna in 1853. The texts are of high linguistic and literary value and among other things tackle social vices including superstition and spiritual limitedness of the people. Záborský criticises superstition several times in his sermons and expresses the opinion that education through the service of the word leading to an intimate knowledge of the true Christian teachings and is the only way in which superstition can be uprooted. One of the sermons deals exclusively with superstition and the fact that it is widespread. The article takes this text as the basis for the analysis and in doing so provides an insight into both the “unofficial” folk beliefs rejected by the church and author’s attitudes towards the matter.

The author of the study points out the state of research of genres in mythological prose in Slavic scientific discourse, mainly in the field of theoretical issues, the publication of source material, and in the field of classification and ethno-linguistic aspects. She confronts outcomes of non-Slovak research with the situation in Slovak folkloristics. Attention is given especially to the issue of terminology of folk text genre classification. These folk texts shed light on the subject of human contact with the surreal world. The author points to the ambiguity of the genre classification of this type of folklore text, which causes researchers considerable problems beyond the boundaries of folklore research.

The intention of the authors of the paper is to present the main areas of scientific research activities of the staff of the Department of Slovak Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts of the UCM in Trnava. The authors’ attention is focused mainly on the current state of research, but they also briefly and selectively point out the short history of the department, as it is one of the youngest higher education institutions in Slovakia dedicated to research of national language and literature. The structure of the text reflects two stages of the department’s development, before 2016 and after 2016, when there was a significant change in staff. The overview of the current research activities of the members of the department also suggests further directions and challenges that this “young” department has to face.
